It's been two weeks since Walter's dental. He is done with his ABs and pain meds and is feeling well. The only thing that is not looking so great is his numbers. He started with higher numbers three days before the dental (=when I put him on ABs) and is only coming down very slowly. I gave him a dosecrease on Sunday and he will get another one on Friday if I don't see any green by then. I know I won't be home enough to monitor today or tomorrow.

Mandarin remains in blues and greens, but there are quite a few higher blues and some very strange cycles. I don't think I have much room to mess with his dose, so he is just staying on 0.25 U for right now.... unless someone thinks that I should change it.

The rest of zoo is doing pretty well - with the exception of Iris. Her breathing has gotten even worse and she still has discharge running from her right ear. It's not really an ear infection, but it seems to be draining from her sinuses. My vet has talked to some people at Purdue and at a specialty clinic in Fort Wayne and I think I will be taking her to Purdue for a consult. I know I have to do something, but the thought of putting her under just terrifies me.

Magnolia (my foster pup) is doing great. She has already gotten a lot better and her skin looks great! I am doubtful that she ever had mange. She will attend her first adoption event tonight. She really is a GREAT puppy and my other dogs adore her... even Bear, my grumpy old Chow Chow. He actually started playing with her and it just warms my heart to see him pick up a toy and wrestle like a puppy.

Moon and Boots, my two foster kittens, finally got adopted last weekend. I am very happy that they got to stay together and that they were adopted by someone I know (a former student of mine).

Meanwhile, my semester has been extra busy and I would love to just have a day to catch up on my sleep... but it doesn't look like that will be happening anytime soon.

I'm glad Walter has recovered well from the dental. I hope his numbers get back on track soon. Without being around to monitor a lot, I would not increase Mandarin's dose right now. I'm glad Magnolia is doing so well and Bear is playing with her. Great Moon and Boots got to stay together and find a good home. Poor Iris. I hope you can find a way to help her. Sending prayers. :bighug::bighug:

How odd that Walter's numbers went up when you started A/Bs! Did they constipate him or upset his tummy maybe?
I don't think you have much wiggle room with Mandarin's dose! He has a lot of greens on his ss so perhaps his pancreas just needs a bit more time. He's looking good!

I agree about Mandarin's dose...he's hitting the 50's. Looks like Walter is heading to get back on track so hopefully you'll see a bit of green soon. Poor wee Iris and hope the specialist has some ideas for you without having to go under. Love all you're pups! Magnolia is adorable and how sweet Bear is playing with her too. Good luck with the adoption event.

I imagine Magnolia stands a good chance at adoption once people hear she's a Harvey doggie. (Unless she takes up permanent residence at Chez Christina) nice report on the other critters - give Walter some time - he'll get there

No, that's the strange thing, he really did well on them. His appetite was normal and he didn't get an upset tummy. Maybe it was just the stress of trying to medicate him! I am just so glad that Insulin is given with a syringe and not in pill form. ;)

Magnolia's first adoption event was pretty awful. She is so sweet and playful at home, I didn't think that she would be as terrified at the shelter as she was. She basically pancaked and I had to carry her and then she looked wide-eyed and scared in her crate. :(

She just fell asleep while she was still chewing on her toy, surrounded by Lenny and Einstein.

I think Magnolia would fit in well with your crew permanently.:p:bighug:

Did you say you have a full schedule?
I hope that Walter will come down to better numbers. Mandarin looks great. Sending vines to Iris and hoping that the specialist has some answers for you.
It looks like Magnolia thinks she has a good home already :). Such a sweetie, and so neat that Bear enjoys playing with her.

Hugs and scritches,

Hi Christina. Was the AB a liquid? Some liquids have a sweetener in them and can cause BGs to rise.

His last few days look better and hopefully without the AB he will continue in all green numbers.

She does indeed fit in very nicely, but unless I win the lottery, she is up for adoption. And I'm sure she would love to find a family where she can be the center of attention... and where she can find a new pair of shoes to chew on.

No liquid, just an enormous capsule. Let's hope that he will go back all blues and greens soon.

....and it looks like Mandarin is once again thinking about an overnight shark hunt. He dropped almost 100 in the first three hours.

How long has Walter been off the AB? I'm sure it takes a while to get it out of the system. I hope he comes back down soon.

Mandarin, keep on showing off your surfing skills! We're all watching and admiring!

Poor, sweet little Iris. You know she has a special place in my heart. I pray you get some answers from the specialist, and a plan to help her feel better. Sending piles of vines.

Ahh, Magnolia, you are in a good home right now, but how do you know there isn't another that's just as good, waiting for someone special like you? Give it a try, sweetie.

Christina, you never cease to amaze me. :bighug: I hope you win the lottery. ;)
