Hi everyone! Today I took Gypsy to the vet for our first glucose curve just to figure out dosage, and to our surprise, she didnt need insulin. Vet gave her 1 unit and her levels dropped to 53.. so they had to quickly force feed her. Gypsy was just diagnosed this week and we thought for sure she needed insulin since her BG was 450 and she also had sugar in her urine and it was diluted.. Today they took her urine and said that it was concentrated at the right levels, tho i think there was still sugar involved.

Vet sent us home with instructions to just home test her, keep it logged, eat low carb wet diet (shes on ff classic now) and if her levels consistently start to go past 300 for over a week then give them a call. Vet says 70-200 is normal for her BG, and that she does not want to put her on insulin unless absolutely necessary, which seems fair. Overall it seems our vet is very relaxed about it, she doesnt seem too worried since in her words cat diabetes takes more time to manifest any serious issues. Is she potentially a borderline diabetic? Or maybe diet is actually helping? Its only been a couple of days. I'm just wondering if this is just a fluke?

One unit may have just been too much and have could be borderline or you could be tight and it could be a fluke. I would home test her for at least a week. See what numbers you get. Hopefully it is a fluke :)

One other thing, my kitty went hypo on only .5 of a unit. She dropped to 30. Now she's on .1 of a unit. Just another reason to home test :)

Thank you! I am so new to all of this, should I be testing her before/after feedings and how much time before/after? Or should I just randomly spot check??

You're gonna wanna test in the morning before she eats. She should be without food for at least 2 hours before you test her. So if you test her at 8am, take her food away at 6am. If she was to need a shot, then you would feed her right after you test her and depending on the insulin you were using, she would get a shot anywhere from while she's eating to a half hour after she eats. Then if your home, test her every 3 hours, only if she's had insulin, if she hasn't, testing her once or twice in the middle of the day would be fine. Then you would test her at the exact same time at night, as you did in the morning, also with no food for 2 hours. So again, take the food away at 6pm for an 8 pm test. She can eat throughout the day tests. Sorry for all the info. Hope it's clear.

Beautiful kitty :)
Thank you! Lol people seem to always have a love/hate approach to her coat, since the markings make her 'mean' looking to some people. I love her all the same :p

Just wondering what is still "normal " for a cat after eating? I realize that it can change drastically. So far shes on no insulin, and tonight after eating about an hour or so I did a test and it came out to 279.. she has had a very stressful day at the vet's prior to it today and I am just wondering if it will affect her values. They did inject 1 unit this morning, but nothing since then. I'll do another test in the morning before feeding.

My vet has a patient that is controlled with food. As long as she eats canned low carb food, she does fine without insulin. Such a lucky kitty

Normal, hmm, that's a tough one, lol. 279 is definitely on the high side. Even with food, you really want them under 120, but anything in the blue is good. Which is under 200. 279 isn't awful, especially if she was stressed. If she hits over 200 for a few days, repost asking about dosing and what you should do further :)

Considering how low she went, and how much stress she had today, I wouldn't really count today's numbers. however, I agree with Ginny that you should keep testing for a few days to be sure.

Normal for a non-diabetic cat doesn't change all that much, but your kitty has had a rough day, and that can change things for any cat. A few relaxed days at home will give you a better idea of what's going on.
