Please say a prayer for my civvie

My sweet, gentle civvie Vinnie is not doing too well. He has recently lost a fair amount of weight, is sleeping a lot more than usual, and now has developed a bad dry, hacking cough, along with a wet-sounding sneeze. I am worried about him; he has never been sick before. He goes this morning to see his vet. I'm praying it's something simple to treat and he will be back to his old self in no time. He is such a love, I hate to see him not feeling well.

Hoping this is just a simple kitty cold and Vinnie is feeling well soon. My civvie, Baby Kitty, is a sweet, gentle little dude, too, and he gets those every so often. I know just how you feel. Sending vines for a positive vet visit :bighug::bighug::bighug:

Thank you! I hope that's all it is. The weight loss scares me because the last kitty I had who started losing weight had to be pts because of kidney disease. :(

Oh, so sorry about your CKD baby! I lost one to that, too, but we battled it for some time. Terrible. When Taffy started losing weight last year, I was sure it was his kidneys and was dreading the news from vet. I was shocked when it was FD!!! (He ate raw.) I hope Vinnie has nothing serious at all, but whatever it turns out, you will take the best care of him! Please keep us updated and, again, good vetty vines for tomorrow :bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug:
 
Okay, summary of the vet visit:

Heart and lungs sound good. (Whew, that's a relief!:woot:)
Left side cheek/jowl gland is slightly swollen.
Could be asthma, but can't diagnose as such without chest xrays and bloodwork.
Could be a URI, I think the vet is leaning toward this option.
Could be a hairball that he can't seem to hack up.
While he looks and feels too thin to me, vet says he's lost less than 1/2 lb since last August and is okay with weight.

For now we are going to treat it as a URI and start him on ABs. If he is still hacking and sneezing a week from now we'll move on to bw and xrays.

Thanks, Julie. My experience with kidney disease was all of about 30 minutes long because the vet I used at that time convinced me that my beloved cat would die in horrible pain in just a few days if I did not have him put to sleep. I trusted her and didn't know any better. It was awful, a true nightmare and a truly ugly and unnecessary death. If I knew then what I have learned since, he would most likely still be with me. She never even did any bloodwork on him! She is my EX-vet now and I will never forgive myself for trusting her. :(:(:(

Sounds like a good report and conservative approach. When Baby gets a URI, I give extra lysine (comes in treats, gels/pastes, or just powder syringed in water), and if he sounds congested I make a little tent with sheets and chairs and put a kennel and warm mist humidifier underneath and he will rest in there. Seems to help. Also, one thing that I have learned is that the manifestation of his respiratory infections are often brought on by stress, and sometimes that stress is external-like fireworks season or household changes,-and other times it has been an indication of other discomfort (recent pancreatitis). With swelling in jaw area, you might keep an eye on his teeth. I don't recall if you said he was eating/peeing/pooping okay?? Don't be surprised if his appy goes down with URI for a few days. Now that you have ABs, I think he'll see improvement soon! Healing vibes to your sweet boy! :bighug::bighug::bighug:

So Sorry about your terrible experience with the vet that treated your CKD kitty. I have had many vets that disappointed me. Too many assume that a pet owner won't be able to do home treatments like sub-Q fluids and meds, but they should really try harder to give options. With the FD, I knew zero five months ago and now I feel I know more than all of the vets that see my kitties. It is disappointing.

It sounds to me like URI, probably viral. In some cats it goes away on its own even without antibiotics.
Rocky had that and it indeed lasted 2 weeks, I gave him some supplements and home cooked chicken soup (without veg). I did not take him to the vet as he was just not 100% but not too ill, just coughing and sneezing, very similar to human common cold.
Some kitties get quite ill and develop secondary bacterial infection and then antibiotics are very useful but Rocky got better with just proper chicken soup and good rest in my bed.
 
I hope ABs are helping Vinnie:cat: on his way to a speedy recovery. Oh how we fret when they aren't feeling well.:oops: Sending more and more healing vines to Vinnie :cat:and a big hug to his Mommy! :bighug::bighug:
