Best Of Luck with that. A spreadsheet would be so much help. Then I have to find a computer to do my spread sheet.
Hi Becki,
How did the curve go this weekend?
I wanted to give you these two links:
One of my cats, McGee, is a short haired tuxedo boy who was vomiting daily and severely constipated. I thought he was having hairballs until I read the first of those 2 links above. I realized that I wasn't always even seeing hair in the vomit. Then I read the second link as well. I started McGee on a probiotic, working from a small amount up to an entire capsule once a day over the course of a couple of weeks. Then he got 1 entire capsule per day for 2 weeks. I tapered him down to one capsule every other day. We bought the Renew Ultimate Colon Care 80,000 cfu brand - there are others mentioned on the links above as well.
We also give him one very tiny sprinkle once a day of ground flax seed (Spectrum brand - you want a people quality flax seed).
Between those two things his constipation and the vomiting are both gone. Perhaps that would help Rags too.
I know you have a lot going on here, and I don't want to cause any more complications, but I think the mineral oil prevents nutritional absorption. I was giving that to my non-diabetic cat since I stopped Laxatone (concerned about the molasses and corn syrup), and he would lap up the mineral oil. I only did it for a week or so, but stopped when I read about the nutritional problem. I tried pumpkin also, and he was highly insulted with that. The Miralax (1/8 tsp. daily for him) works like a charm, and is very inexpensive. Maybe just the Miralax would help him with the constipation problem. I know that gets very serious very fast. So sorry you have so many issues going on at once. P.S. It sounds like your kitty would probably need more Miralax than mine.Yes. Rags has been a diabetic since 2013. I was on the site then with a SS and his picture.
He went down to 35 when he was first diagnosed, but no siezure. He has not been having bowel movements for 6 to 7 days at a time. He does pull his long hair out. If I see him doing that I get the hair out of his mouth. I took him to the Vet four times for this. Her answer was Mirilax and Mineral oil in his food which I had been doing with no results. Today I found a piece of stool in my back room that had something sticking out of it about 2 inches long. It looked like his hair all twisted up. Before the bowel movement he would throw all his food up. I had him to the Vet for that. This was before I had him their for the BM. 's. I have stopped the mineral oil and mirilax and tried pumpkin but he will not eat that. I really think that is what this is all about. I didn't want him to get a bowel blockage. I am at a loss !! This morning at 5:45 a.m. his BS was 429. Last night he did not eat well.
5:45 last night BS 248
He only ate 3/4 of a can of FF with water at 6:09 a.m. I tried to feed him more at 10:00 a.m. but he refused. He is drinking water.
Sending good poo vines to your boy Rags.
I hope you get the test strips and he is doing better today.
Love and Healing Vines to Rags.
Have you ever tried the pelleted newspaper litter? One brand is "Yesterday's News".Thank you very much. He is not having trouble pooing now, it is just running out of him because of miralax. Does anyone know of any litter that would not stick all over his back side and legs and tail ? I just realized the clumping litter is NOT good for him, it clumps all over him. I tried wheat litter last night and he urinated on my throw rug in the bedroom. Evidentally he does not like wheat. I thought tonite I would put newspaper in my shredder and try that, but he probably won't like that either,. I KNOW he likes cat nip because that is how I trained him to use the litter box. He was going all over my house,. Now the problem is I cannot put catnip down for Miki, cause he will pee on it. lol !! He is now taking an antibiotic, a nausea pill and a pain medicine. I feel so bad for him, it's been nothing but trouble for the last four years. One thing right after the other for my poor boy.

So now I'll make another suggestion, but this one is about litter. I can't find it any more, but for a while there was this pine scented pellet-like litter that I loved. I saw it mentioned on here by another name, but I can't find it or remember what it was called. It smelled wonderful, didn't make a huge mess, and from how it worked, I don't think it would stick to him. If I can find the name, I'll post it. Again sorry about the poo problem. Finding that balance is so hard! Prayers for you and your poor boy.Oh, dear, I hope the Miralax diarrhea is not because of my suggestion.I am so sorry.

No wonder you're tired. No, the Vet wants me to give him 1/2 tsp. Bid and 1/2 tsp. of mineral oil bid
Because his rectum is herniated on both sides and the feces builds up and he can't go. I have only been giving him 1/4 tsp. Of miralax once a day and he goes a little bit all over the house. I just shredded news paper and put it in his box, but I know he won't use it. I'm just gonna get some fine clay litter and see what that does. I've used the pelllets and he will not go into the box. Neither willl Miki. The wheat litter stuck to him just like the clumping litter. It was all over the house when I got home from work. It took me an hour and a half to clean it all up !! I'm tired. I also have to do this at 5:00 a. m.
No wonder you're tired.I hope you can figure something out soon. Maybe the fine clay litter will work as you said. That's what mine are using now. They don't like the clumping litter, and they didn't like the pine stuff either although I did. It's kind of like they were telling me that if I liked it so well, I could use it, but they weren't going to.
I remember my mom just using dirt, and there are times I'd like to use that, because the cats seemed to like that a lot. Hugs to you.
I hope your arm is okay. I got bit really badly a few weeks ago by one of our non-diabetic cats when she was sick with colitis, and I was giving her meds. I've been bit before, but this time it got terribly infected. Please watch out for infection. (Stating the obvious here.)Rags just tried to get on my lap. When I picked him up all I could feel were chunks of litter all over his tummy. I had just given him pain med. when I tried to soak the lumps, he bit me so hard on my arm that it is now bleeding. I told him he would not be sleeping in my bed tonite. I made him get off the chair and told him he was bad. He cannot bite me like that. I have NEVER had a kitty bite me like that !! I know he is in pain but I didn't do anything to hurt him. He is a very big baby always has been. The news paper litter box scared him. I'm afraid to get dirt because of the fleas.

Becki, if he can't pee that's really dangerous. Also he's miserable and that could be causing the uncharacteristic biting behavior. He doesn't know how to tell you he's hurting other than acting out. Yet another cat story (sorry), but we had a cat that had a plugged urethra off and on, and he was understandably in terrible pain during those times. Their suffering is horrible. If he hasn't peed yet, I would take him to the vet right away. His bladder could burst, and it's horribly painful. I know...sometimes yet one more vet visit seems overwhelming, but the fix with this isn't bad. They empty his bladder and then with meds, they recover very nicely.Last night I didn't let Rags sleep with me because of all the litter stuck to his tummy and he bit me real hard. Soooo to get even, he went in the bathroom to the litter box with the newspaper and spread it all over every room he could get to in my house. 3:30 a.m. I'm running around the house trying to get all this newspaper up. I also just realized he did not urinate all night. I did check the rug this a.m. but there was no urine in any of the boxes. Oh God, what's next ?? I pray he doesn't stop urinating too.
No poo this a.m. either. I did give him miralax and mineral oil, but only 1/4 of a tsp. of each.
So sorry, just read back through earlier posts, and you have gotten him shaved before, and you're a nurse so I was already telling you things you had written or already know. Has he peed yet?I hope your arm is okay. I got bit really badly a few weeks ago by one of our non-diabetic cats when she was sick with colitis, and I was giving her meds. I don't know if you would want to do this or not, but would you consider shaving him in the areas that are a problem just while he's going through all of this? Or having it done at a groomers if you can't do it? Another of our cats (I have a cat story for every situation, it seems) had mats very badly, and I finally just shaved her. She's pretty sweet though and didn't try to bite. They are all so different, hence the ECID.
I wouldn't use dirt either. It's too heavy, and we don't have enough to spare. Yeah, the fleas and the bugs...I didn't even think of that.
Thinking of you and Rags and hoping you're both okay.![]()

I meant shaved on the tummy area. I need to go back and read your previous posts more carefully. Having someone tell you something that you've just answered is frustrating. You have enough going on without me doing that so I apologize. He has been shaved the Vet did it when she took out the feces.. I had an appt. for him yesterday for a hair cut but he has been in so much pain since the Vet visit that I cancelled it. I don't even know how it is getting on his belly as I do not have a lot of litter in his box. This has never happened before. He is also starting to eat less. I looked at him this a.m. and he looks like he has lost weight since Monday. No Rags will not let "ME" do anything to him. he always thinks I am going to hurt him. I tried to put pain med on his ear, he ran. Doesn't like his ears touched. As I've said Many times before, he ia a different kind of cat. Out of 13, I've never had one like him !!!
I had to go to work so I don't know. I get done at 1:30. I don't mind your kitty stories at all. Yes I do know how serious it is if he doesn't go to the bathroom. It didn't hit me until I started writing on the Forum this morning. I've been up since 3:30 a.m. so I am NOT thinking real well right now. He keeps me very busy all the time. When I get home from work it takes me an hour and a half to clean up all the diarrhea and litter all over the house. Then we have dinner and sometimes he eats seven bowls of food. 1/4 of a can of FF in each bowl, that takes me another hour and a half. I'm telling you he is a piece of work. But I love him.

Don't you wish they could tell us what's wrong or you could explain why you're doing something they don't like. It would make life so much easier for them and for us.
I hope when you get home, you find that he has peed nicely in his litter box. Please let me know how you are both doing. I know how tight it gets with vet bills and all, but if he hasn't peed, I hope you are able to take him in. Thoughts and prayers for you both.
That's pretty sweet! He really trusted you to help him, and you did!No apologies needed. I didn't know the litter was on his tummy. This is a first. YES ! I tell them that everyday. I wish you could tell Mommy what is wrong so I can fix it, but you always hide it. However, when Rags was diagnosed Diabetic, he DID tell me. He came right out to the kitchen when I was leaving for work and just kept looking at me. I asked him if he was sick, he meowed and rubbed my leg. We went to the Vets that afternoon. The Vet and I both thought he had Hyperthyroidism. NOT !
I appreciate you letting me know. Thanks!I will definitely let you know when I get home before the cleaning. Yes, I would definitely take him to the Vet if he isn't urinating. That is VERY painful. I pray he did go.
Thank you so much for your concern.
And I need to get back to homeschooling my daughter. BTW my middle daughter is going to nursing school right now. Do you enjoy it?I appreciate you letting me know. Thanks!
How is your arm? That's handy at least, with you being a nurse and at work so you can treat it. Mine got really infected, and I didn't want to go in (too high of a deductible) so I ended up soaking it in bleach. Not a recommended treatment, and one I wouldn't suggest, but it did clear it up.
Hope you have a good day at work. It's hard to concentrate on that when you have something like this going on at home. Blessings to you!And I need to get back to homeschooling my daughter. BTW my middle daughter is going to nursing school right now. Do you enjoy it?
That's a terrible thing for someone to do to you. Some people, huh?! I hope she had the decency to feel bad when you were seriously hurt. It's too bad that you aren't able to do your nursing, especially since you loved it.I'm home and worried, no pee. However I did get to thinking about the shredded news paper all over the house and on Rags. Why would he do that if he didn't pee ? I checked the trash and some felt a little damp.
He looks uncomfortable, but I don't know if he is upset with me or hurting
I called my Vet and the girl said she would not be in until tomorrow. I told her about him and said I thought he maybe blocked. She got ugly and said "you don't know that until the Doctor looks at him ". I said this is serious, he could be in a lot of trouble. She didn't even offer one of the Docs that are there now. I'm wondering if the litter could be blocking him if he is blocked. He has never had litter on his belly like this before.
I am no longer nursing I am disabled. A girl in a Doctors office that I worked for opened the bottom file drawer all the way out and walked away. My back was to it. She then had someone call me at the front desk. I turned around to go up there and fell over the drawer. I can still see her laughing her head off. I herniated a disc in my back. Two failed back surgeries. Yes I loved nursing very much and really miss it a lot !!
I am now a part time receptionist at Resources for Independent Living.
Glennie, I pray Rags will be o. l. until tomorrow. This boy has been thru so much ! I do not want anything to happen to him.

I am hoping with you that the dampness means he did pee. Let me know what happens tomorrow if you do have to take him in, if you don't mind. It's too bad the receptionist acted like that. Again, some people! I've had that happen also, and it's never pleasant. Someone that works at a vet office needs to know enough to be concerned about a cat that could have a blockage. Hope you have an okay night and that all is well with Rags. Prayers for you both.![]()
I'm praying that Rags has peed, and is okay until morning, too.
Have you ever tried the pelleted newspaper litter? One brand is "Yesterday's News".
I am wishing you The Best of Luck with Ragsto you for caring about him so much.
Of course! It sounds hopeful that he is eating well. I know, it's hard to do things that cause them discomfort, even if it's for their own good. Back to the I wish they understood. Although sometimes it seems as if they do. You have a good evening and hang in there.Thank you so much for your concern about us. It's nice to know some people care. It's 7:30 p. m. and Rags has not moved. He is eating very well. He has been on his window seat all this time. I finally got him to get on my lap. Thank you for your prayers, I have been praying all nite. I dont want him to have to go thru anymore pain. First his backside, now his little pee pee. That will hurt. He is taking an antibiotic and a pill for nausea. He thinks I'm trying to hurt him all the time. Now he is finally opening his mouth so I can pop his pill, thank God. I just hate stuffing him to give him meds. I'll let you know and keep you updated. Thank you for caring.

So glad he peed for you. Yellow gold they sometimes call it. Hope he is able to poo okay when he needs to. Great that he is eating and comfortable enough to sleep. Have a great day!Good Saturday morning !!
Great news, Rags did pee-pee this a. m.
I think his BS must be low. Out of strips so I can't take it Won't be able to order them until the 31st. Of course when he is high he goes more. There have been no more feces for a couple of days now. He did try last nite. Even got his backside all the way in the litter box too. Wish he could do that when he really does go. lol !!! He is eating good
Sleeping right now. What else??
Just wanted to let you know he did do pee, THANK GOD !!! Didn't want to put him through anymore pain !!
No strips is scary...hope you guys do okay. Think I'll check into the above place for strip price. After the morning I had with what I think are defective strips (either they are defective or I am), I may need to do something different.I used to buy this deal for the Arkray Glococard Vital Test Strips. $56.00 for 250 strips equals $0.22 cents a strip.
Thanks for the tips on the strips, both the ADW and the Arkray Glococard Test Strips. Do they work with the Relion Confirm glucometer? I need to check into this more. But thanks!I'm so glad he peed and seems to be acting fine. Since you have no test strips, I would make sure he has access to food in case he needs to eat.
I used to buy strips from ADW (American Diabetes Wholesale) for a good price.
Glad you found a good deal on the strips. Poor Rags! Hope he feels better soon. Gets bewildering sometimes trying to figure out what's going on...I found strips on Amazon for $32.00 for 200 of them. I just won't have money until Friday.
He seems to be having pain now.
The litter is STILL clumped up all over him. I try to get them off but he isn't having it. I sure hope they fall off soon.
