Question about feeding and what to do with extremely nervous cat

A repairman had to come in today to fix my dryer. Noah has always been extremely nervous and hid under a blanket for the entire time and two hours after he left. Now of course he has diabetes and his blood sugar levels went up. Anything I can do to help now? I mean I always felt bad when he was scared, but the BG going up is not good.

Also, Noah has been doing really well lately, but we can't seem to get that green AMPS. I know feeding is not recommended in the second part of the cycle, but Noah has been free feed all his life before diabetes and not having food all the time seems to make him even more nervous. When I put food in the feeder at night he tries to push it open with his paws and his mouth. He sleeps in my bed and I hear him wake up and RUN (he's old... he's usually not a runner) to the feeder when he hears the noise of the feeder moving. Any suggestions?

Some kitties here are grazers. That's OK if that's what they are used to. Just try to make sure he doesn't eat for a couple hours before shot time so the PS number is not carb influenced.

Don't worry about that green AMPS yet. The AMPS numbers are often the last numbers to come down. Dawn phenomenon may be at play. Give him time.

Two weeks ago, 131 would not have been your definition of a high blood sugar. :p:p Patience. That number could also be the "high" before the low. With tht 58 last night it looks like he's flirting with another reducie. Noah's looking great.:)

Shadow was another one that I fed whenever she wanted except for the two hours before shot time......
and no one ever saw her in person.....
only family.
I was the only one who could give her a shot....

Are you already filling all the slots in your feeder (I'm assuming it's a five meal feeder?)? If no, fill four of them full and leave the last one empty. Set the feeder to turn every two-three hours or so and the last one to turn two hours before shot time. That should give Noah food right up until the time he shouldn't have any. Maybe that will help.

Yup, forgot to put on the patience pants again today!

Thank you all for the GREAT advice. I make sure I don't feed two hours before shot time, but I will try @Tricia Cinco(GA) & Harvey advice about filling his feeder. He just seems to be stressed out about not having food all the time. He used to eat dry food and he would eat when he felt like it, but now he just eats EVERYTHING at once. He really likes the freeze-dried raw.

I try not to bring too many people in the house, but sometimes you just have no choice. His blood glucose level is already down, so I was stressing over seeing blue. I never thought I would be disappointed about BLUE! Putting on the patience pants right now!

When you know someone is coming, do you put him in a quiet room with the door closed and his favorite things around ahead of time? You might even play some soft music to help disguise the sounds and calm him.

I tried a couple of times and he would bang his head in the door until I would open the door. He doesn't like to be in a room with the door closed. He's afraid of men. He'll tolerate most women unless they try to touch him before he gives them the signal that it's OK to do so. I found him as a really small kitten and his mother had left him in my backward. I had to bottle feed him and I've been his mommy since that day. He has to see me at all time or he cries and bring me toys in his mouth. His brother is scared of everything too! These are my first cats and I work from home most of the times so they aren't used to being left alone.

Lincoln is a run and hide and BG go up kitty too whenever anyone comes over... had to get him used to my dad cause he comes over to help me renovate the house a lot... lol i had dad feed him a little meat from the fridge till now he loves him... the only person he ever really didnt run and hide from was my youngest brother who he jumped up and cuddled with... funny thing is my brother is way better with animals then people and suffers from anxiety and depression so maybe Lincoln sensed a soul like his... sucks that Noah gets scared like that too... i just let Lincoln go to where he feels safe and then try to take a treat there to let him know its ok :bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug: and for the record i would kill for your blue/green ss lol definitely need another pair of patience pants :p

And you were right YET AGAIN ;) Noah was indeed working his way towards another reduction!

I know, I know. It's only been two months and 2 weeks since the diagnosis. I should be over the moon about the blue and green SS, but I'm really not patient. I'm working on it and I'm really grateful he is doing so well.

Hoping Lincoln joins Noah soon in the permanent (anti-jinx) blue and green soon! He's spending more and more time in the green and clearing his bounces way faster. That's how it started with Noah ;)

Lincoln has been diabetic for 2 years now... i didnt find the forums as fast as you did... most likely he is going to be on it for life but i will do my best to get him regulated and as healthy as he can be...

Our civie Bella, who suffered a lot of emotional trauma/loss before she came to us, is one who disappears when someone she doesn't know comes into the house. She doesn't panic like she used to (fear of being taken away; she came to me from high kill shelter tbd list: she and her BFF were dumped by their lifelong family).
But she continues to not make herself visible until company leaves, and she now more often comes out sooner rather than later.
Time and patience and tlc, as in all things.

For Bella, I do think that periodic rescue remedy and my HV's periodic homeopathic remedies helped to gently ease her and her stress responses.

Have you tried Rescue Remedy (the pets or kids versions are the alcohol-free versions). Maybe a drop or two in daily water for awhile to see if that helps?

Also petsalive offers some natural formulations for stress and/anxiety. I've not used those particular ones, but it might be worth looking at just in case.

Thank you! I'm going shopping for more food for Noah tomorrow and will look for these products. Anything is worth a try!

Poor Bella. Glad she found you and your family. :bighug:
