Ok so Big K is at 5 hours since his shot and meal. I decided to do a test because I think that's when the insulin is peaking. 131!!! I am shocked!! And honestly it scared the crap out of me because I'm so used to high numbers. So I gave him a small meal mostly chicken (which I do everyday since he is off the dry). Testest again an hour later and we're now at 183. So I assume he is climbing now until next shot.
If you notice on his SS his PS numbers have been SLIGHTLY lower. Big emphasis on the slightly. He's testing about 450's PS when he's normally pushing 600.
I will definitely be doing my PS testing faithfully now that I know he's dropping like that.
I'm worried about the drastic ups and downs with the vetsulin. It seems to be doing its job, just not for the full 12 hours. Is this hard on his body going up and down like this?
My other 4 cats eat dry food and I moved it somewhere Big K can't jump (old man). Maybe he was nibbling and I didn't know and that's what the big change is. But geeze he is a rollercoaster. Just worried about the effects of the way ups and the way downs.

Low numbers are scary when you aren't used to seeing them. The vetsulin/caninsulin does seem to do a very quick savage drop. Sky holds her numbers really well, usually for the full 12 hours.

I think the only way you can be sure is to do more testing to see what is going on at the end of the cycle, taking into account any food eaten. Also more testing on different days if possible to see if it's a pattern or an anomaly. I don't know whether the drops are hard on him - how is he in himself? Does he seem to be struggling with it - again, Sky did initially when she was on it (but was on far to high a dose and I don't think she got over that). She had a break on a different insulin and is now back on Caninsulin (vetinsulin) and is not showing any ill effects this time round. Sky gets her low numbers at the start which makes her a dosing nightmare!

His sugars could be naturally dropping now he is off his dry food and that may need to be taken into account when you inject him.

Ok just did pmps 434. I only gave 1 unit. He didn't eat much. He meowed when I injected. For the first time. It broke my heart.
Where do you guys inject?
I've been doing his front shoulders. Should I rotate to back? I feel sick over the cry of pain.
I feel like 1u was a good choice since he dropped so low today with 1.5.

Also do you pull back on the plunger? My vet told me to and it shouldn't draw blood in. This is the part that hurts him.

Also do you pull back on the plunger?

No, it's totally unnecessary.....the needles on insulin syringes are very short and designed to only go into the subQ layer.....the worst you might do is knick a capillary.....you can't really get into a vein

Now at 4+ he's 446. I'm so confused!

He's "bouncing"....his body probably hasn't been in blue numbers in a long time, so his liver reacted and released stored sugars and hormones to bring him back up.....this too shall pass

Just as a reminder.....bouncing can happen for 1...numbers that drop too low 2. numbers that drop too quickly 3. numbers that the cats body isn't used to anymore (or any combination of the 3)

Thank you for the answer about pulling back on the syringe!
What about location? Do you move around? Is it possible he is sore? I've never shot in the back hips before I'm a little unsure about it.
Thank you for all the answers.
