something is going on with my memory right now, I think it's a side effect of a certain medication I was taking so I have stopped the medication but it's gonna be a couple weeks for it to be out of my system. So I really need everybody's help and refreshing my memory on what to do and not to do as far as skittles Falling out of remission. His new doctor and I are hoping that it's just because of the infection in his tooth and that he will go back into remission but until then I might have to start him on 1 unit of insulin.
But I just can't remember anything tonight , and really need y'all help.
Since I'm not sure if The Friskies that he has been eating has changed the carb count tonight I went and got cans of fancy feast off of the food list. He just ate 30 minutes ago, so when do I test his level and if it is over 350 should I go ahead and give him 1 unit?
Basically I think the best thing right now is treat me as a complete newbie again, even though he is my second cat that has gotten diabetes and also once again went into remission because of the awesome advice and tips from everybody here . I really really want to get him back into remission. The vet said that it is possible that he could go into it a second time, but how often does that happen that you guys know of ? And if it does happened, what time frame are we looking at ? Should I go ahead and restart insulin or wait a couple days and see if the meds for his infected tooth kick in and bring his BG back down?
In case no one remembers me.... I am the queen of questions and for some reason when it comes to my own animals , I get very insecure and second-guess my every move even though I have been in the veterinarian Field for over 30 years and I am a licensed wildlife Rehabber ( took classes at my local college to get certified )
PS
I am also awful at taking my time to proofread before I hit send (((( blushing)
PSS
Does anybody remember me, even though skittles has been in remission for a year
and 2 weeks , I am still around reading , but only post once in a while

Generally you wait for two hours after eating to test BG so it is not food influenced. I bought some u40 syringes from ADW with half markings on them to measure out half doses if that helps. I use the u100 syringes for odd doses, 1.2, 1.4, etc. using a conversion chart. Remember, if he is being treated for a tooth infection it could raise his BG in which case you would have to monitor more closely.

Smoky had a recent UTI and I had to give him a higher dose for a few weeks. Once the infection was cleared up that dose became too high for him and I had to lower it again. You could always test him to see what his BG is and go from there.

He ate about 1 1/2 hours ago and his BG is 349 right now. Keep in mind that he has NOT gotten insulin since 12/05/2015. ( my earlier Christmas present last Christmas)
He started the med for his tooth today around 12:00. Vet said to give him 1 unit if his BG level reaches 350. It's so close right now , but I'm going to bed in a few hours and I don't know how he will react to getting insulin again , so I'm to scared to give him insulin if he goes over 350. ( since I will be sleeping and can't watch him )
His SS is up to date expect for the test I just did

I was reading some material I got today, it said to use insulin within 6-8 weeks after opening ...my bottle has the expiration date as April 2017. I've had it a year ( in the fridge ) please please don't tell me that I can't use it. There is no way I can afford a new bottle. I actually have 2 bottles, the old bottle has only 1/4 left and The expiration date has January 2017 on it . Both are still clear and look like they did when I first got them.

I'd say the old bottle (ProZinc, right?) would have lost it's potency so you shouldn't use it. If the other one hasn't yet been opened - ie., the coloured plastic cap is still over the rubber seal - it should be OK.

Both bottles have been opened. To be safe, I'm only going to say I have one bottle since one only has 1/4 left and it expiration date is January 2017 ( this month )

The bottle I have now of ProZinc, I did use it a few times back in Dec 2015 so it is open and the expiration date on the bottle is 4/2017

If u were to use prozinc that is open and sitting for that long it probably wld not have an effect anyway. Did you consider contacting DCIN- Diabetic Cats In Need. They have a FB page and regular website.
@Critter Mom might be able to tell you more about them. I know they may provide one time help with diabetic supplies. I'm not sure if that includes insulin or not. There is also a supply closet on FDMB where members are donating or selling insulin to those in need.

No , I can't afford a new bottle Vet asked did I have insulin, but didn't even ask how long and honestly I didn't think about either since I had checked the expiration date before I left for my visit this is so not good on top of skittles falling out of remission and now my insulin is not any good this really sucks and even if I am lucky enough for somebody to donate it's going to take days for it to get here shoot don't know what to do

Does your vet offer care credit? It's a type of credit card for pet care needs? Maybe you could talk to them and see if they offer payment plans?

Another option is to try one of the cheaper insulins like Vetsulin (Novolin too?) to get your kitty under way. ProZinc is very expensive and if your full bottle has been punctured it probably isn't good any more.

Yes they do, but I let my mom use it for her dog , she just finished maxing it out on Monday. Her dog had to get over $500.00 in test done. I need to explain , my dad hated house dogs but for some reason he showed up one day with a puppy for my mother and then less than three months later he was killed so it's kind a like maybe he had some kind of foresight. So as you can imagine this dog is extremely important to my mother and I and I had no idea that this was going to happen to skittles so now I cannot use the card whatsoever due to the amount that it's taking to find out What's wrong with my mom's dog , like I said the card is maxed out and my mother had to actually pay another 200 out of her pocket.

Yes very expensive, now is $155! When I bought it a year ago it was $100 ,what is going on. And my new vet said that I have to order it at least four weeks ahead of time. My old kept it in stock. But according to vet the insulin is still good because the expiration date isn't until April 2017 even though I used it a handful of times. And the only way to find out is to use it and then test skittles. What else really sucks is the fact that I have to take seven different medications a day and my pharmacist has dropped my secondary insurance so now I have very high co-pays. Just one medication is $50 after the insurance pays. I have two insurance coverages for reason and now I can't even use them. And now the same thing is happening with my daughter's medicine , only one insurance company is paying. My town is very small and we are very limited on the pharmacist that we have and the place that does except both of my insurances is over an hour away .
Like I stated somewhere in one of my post from last night I have the worst luck, the past five years have been the worst struggles of my life and I just don't know how much more I can take !

I posted in the ProZinc forum, I gave him 1 unit and need to know if I need to test him 2 hours.

I would test him two hours after shot to see where he is at. Did he eat anything lately and he should not have food to eat for two hours before you test him.

I did test him after 2 hours, wouldn't let him eat until after I tested here are his numbers

AMPS-436 gave 1 unit and let him eat
+2- 401 ( hadn't had any food in 2 hours )

Did you get any tests in the range of +5 to +7 hours? Post the PMPS later as well as a before bed test result. That might help you to know if the insulin is working.

I just tested him, how do I link my post? I'm posting in the ProZinc forum. Please look for me there. Got a GOOD number , insulin is working :)

How do I copy & paste a URL using a IPad? And then how do I open another tab to use the URL ( and still be logged in on both open tabs)
your browser will automatically keep you logged in when you open a second tab but that isn't even necessary. i don't have an ipad but on my iphone the following works (and they are similar):
1. touch in the URL area and hold until popup displays options
2. touch Select All
3. touch Copy when popup displays options
4. go to other forum and start new thread
5. touch and hold in the area where you write your post until popup displays options
6. touch Paste
voilà, the URL you copied will now be in the first post of your new thread
