Good Morning L & L ~

We are starting off the same as yesterday despite a snack at precisely +9 ( 3 AM EST) I gave him his regular size mini meal of 1/4 can so, tonight I will lessen the amount to see if that helps. Also, he had just giving a big deposit in the LB and had just finished his Happy Crap Dash right before testing.

We should be getting the raw rabbit today and I am going to give it to him tonight for the first time since I don't let him outside after dinner. I remember a discussion about raw food not lowering the numbers for a couple of weeks. Does that apply to kitties off insulin too? Anybody know?

Forrest update: Vet visit yesterday and the vet agrees with my suspicion of thyroid as he found a nodules on his thyroid and did the expensive senior panel. Also, said he has a heart murmur now which goes with the thyroid issue and I need to start getting RR on him for a baseline and we will be monitoring that. I feel like @jayla-n-Drevon running a nursing home for animals and peeps. ;) But, this is very treatable and for that I am grateful.

I think with any food changes it takes a bit to settle in but not sure about the "time". Hope Bubbs likes it. A good poop does Doodles a lot of good with is bg's. Sorry about Forrest but glad your suspicions were validated and it can be treated. Think green Bubba and have fun mousie chasing today buddy.
 
Sorry about the diagnosis, but, yes, treatable is a good thing.

...and good luck with the food switch. My cats now all like the Chicken + EZ Complete. I haven't been brave enough to try raw (and I have to admit that I am somewhat grossed out by raw meat), so I am cooking the chicken. But that's been a big hit. And, as a bonus, they all like extra broth with their meals - so I have also been able to increase their water intake.

I'm glad it's something that can be treated with Forrest. :bighug:

Is the EZ complete just supplements that you add to your homemade? I am going to start looking for recipes for raw homemade because of $$$$ I will continue to feed both canned and raw (assuming they like it) so if I can't make some or forget to thaw I will have a back up. The vet gave me a print out about hyperthyroidism in cats and a study was done that cats that eat wet food from pop-top cans have a 5 times greater risk of developing hyperthyroidism than cats that eat dry. The aluminum cans are lined with a substance called bisphenol-a-diglycidyl ether which is transferred to the food containing oils or fats. In other areas of the world where those type cans aren't used, hyperthyroidism in cats is not a common disease.

There are other factors for developing it other than just the above. A good reason to make my own food.

Been gradually integrating EZC with home cooked meat for Sootie and civvies, goal being to decrease/cross paws eliminate canned and gradually transition all to partially cooked/partially raw if not all raw.

Good thing about EZC is that it's made to be compatible with cooked or raw. Laurie at food fur life very helpful!

Yes bummer that many of the pet food cans are lined with that chemical (and all the other not good stuff. A few years ago I read that the small and medium sized wellness cat food cans didn't have that liner coating but the large cans did.
 
That's kind a nice to let Bubba go to his wildness ! Just to know he might use his weapons
on something else then a carpet is amazing. Wish him good hunting.

balls of meat.

I've had 2 hyperthyroid kitties and it can be treated. You may even find the heart murmur goes away after you treat it. My DD is hyperthyroid and right at diagnosis she had to be put on blood pressure medicine. After she was on methimazole for awhile she no longer needed the blood pressure meds.

I'm giving the boys raw rabbit tonight. I am wondering if I switch to all raw if his hyperthyroid condition can go away?

Ugh, study after study really aggravates me. Just like human studies...one day we should drink 2 cups of coffee the next 3 and after that don't drink ANY or you'll grow thorns out of your skull. The pharmaceutical commercials are even worse. Ok, sorry for going on my little "rant". I will always hold my ground that dry food does not cause diabetes. Being overweight, lack of exercise and genetics causes diabetes. Of course once diabetic the dry has to go because the body can't handle the carbs anymore.

I hope Bubba and Forrest love the new food! The foodfurlife website has a ton of info on transition and supplements. My cousin started raising rabbits because her poor son is allergic to everything under the sun.

Hmmm, not sure if diet plays into hyperthyroid. It is certainly worth a try.

I know it is a very treatable disease. I gave one of my cats methimazole twice a day for 10 years. One I did the radioactive iodine treatment for.

My DD has been on methimazole for 4 years. She is old enough now for the radioactive iodine treatment, but I haven't done it because I am overwhelmed and she is very regulated on the meds.

I have tried various consistencies and my cats much prefer larger chunks with lots of broth added to the mix. When I put the chicken into the food processor, it looked almost like regular canned food... but they didn't care for it. And the meat kind of separated from the water after I froze it. I don't think I would want to eat that either. So I now I just cut it into chunks.

So far, I have only tried chicken. They all prefer dark meat over chicken breasts. I think I will try turkey next. ...and so far, the work hasn't been too bad. I bought a larger slow cooker to make larger portions... but I am cooking for 6 cats.

Cool!! Love to hear more how it goes!

I haven't been grinding it at home. I get it ground. Getting closer to grinding raw at home for cooked or raw, and then very slowly introducing raw, crossing paws. A friend who dies raw only uses food processor to grind up the meat. No bones.
Right now I get it ground, Make cooked batches per ffl recipe. Started cooking it in water well done, gradually shifting to medium rare.

HA--the senior facility....These boys sure do keep up on our paws!
Rico has been very bright and playful today .... which naturally goes hand in hand with Dre deep sea diving all night and bean working early:banghead::banghead::banghead:
(of course Dre is snoozing since he had a late skinny dip in the deep end:rolleyes:)
I hope the murmur goes away!! He did tell you to get the RR asleep?? Is very hard to get accurate when awake.....

Yes, he did tell me to get the RR when he's asleep, and I have yet to catch him asleep when I thought about it. :rolleyes: So hoping that the BW doesn't show any other problems .
 
good luck... every time I am ready to get Ricos he seems to "know" and wake up:cat: (hence the phone flashlight while he is asleep on the bed at 3am:rolleyes:)

How do they know????:confused:
