Hello, I wish I was here with good news but I am at a loss. I have a newly diagnosed kitty who also has lung problems (asthma possibly). The blood work came back with a fructosamine level around 300. My life has no stability and am not able to provide the care needed for a diabetic/possibly asthmatic kitty. After learning about diet and switching from dry kibble to raw (Furry Foodie) she's doing much better (gaining weight back and energy, not urinating as much). But reading what people do in order to try to keep their kitties going I know that it is not possible to maintain a schedule to properly care for her. I've spoken to multiple cat owners I know and rescues and no one wants to deal with her ailments. I have multiple cats and this has been quite a challenge. I am in the process of rehoming one of the other ones to the previous owner now that she has her own place and can have cats. Is there any chance that someone would be able to care for her? I think she has a real chance with someone who can devote the care needed who is healthy and has the resources. I'm glad I found this board and hope you are all well. I appreciate the care you are able to provide to your cats.

Are you willing to learn to home test? It is possible that removing her dry food may have dropped her glucose levels significantly. Also, is her asthma under control? If she was also having issues with it at the time she was tested, it could cause the readings to be higher. Stress and infections can raise glucose levels.

By home testing before each meal, you will have a more accurate reading of what her glucose levels are. Many of us use human glucose meters. If you are in the US, the Walmart Relion brand meters are good and also inexpensive to use. I believe that 300 is not very high for the fructosomine test and why it may be possible the changes you have already made may be enough. Home testing can confirm that. Once you know for sure then you can decide if you need to rehome her.

If you've been reading through the message board, I know it can seem like it's a lot of time and work involved in caring for a sugarcat, but it doesn't necessarily have to be

If you can spare 5 minutes in the morning to test/feed/shoot and 5 minutes in the evening to T/F/S, and get some tests in (that take less than a minute) each day, that's all that's really required to care for your kitty at home

A 300 fructosamine is really very good and your kitty may be headed for remission just from the diet change.

Let us help you learn what's really involved in caring for your cat....but if it's still more than you can handle, please do let DCIN try to help you rehome him

I agree, that once you find the routine that works best for you, it only adds a few minutes to your daily routine. I once was caring for two diabetic cats in addition to several other cats, and it only added about 5 minutes each morning and evening to test both of them and give them their shots.

I appreciate the feedback from you all. Unfortunately, I have no stability for pets and am in the process of rehoming. I hope that the remission is happening as I am told that it's rare by my vet but reading some of the stories here it appears to be more common. I've been putting the animal's health before my own and can no longer cope. Luckily, a coworker has told me she knows a woman who has a yard and has the ability to care for her so I'll hear back hopefully before the weekend. Thank you all.

If the new owner needs help please send them here. I have a kitty who has asthma and I can share what works for my kitty as well as where to buy the inhaler and flovent for a better price then the vets and pharmacy in the US.
Good luck if she isn't able to take kitty please contact DCIN as mentioned.

Thank you DebG! I'll hopefully find out today. Again, thank you all for your kindness and support.
