Oops, sorry, I copied it but forgot to paste it!
I'm sorry Squallie is not wanting to eat. Have you changed his food recently? Sometimes the batches of the same brand of food can be different and cats can get picky. Do you have any baby food (meat only, no veggies) you can try? Or tuna? Sending prayers.:bighug: I hope you're feeling better.
I changed to a different food a couple of weeks ago, but he seemed to really like it. I did buy this lot from a different source, so maybe something is different about it. No baby food, but I can get my son to pick some up for me. I'm also getting an appetite stimulant from the vet.

I am feeling better, thanks!:bighug:

Okay, my vet gave me Cyproheptadine as an appetite stimulant for Squallie. I know lots of folks here have used it, can anybody fill me in on it's effects and/or possible side-effects? Thanks!

I used cypro on Marshmallow and I liked it better than Mirtazapine. She got spacey and weird on Mirtz but on cypro she had no side effects. It took about 30 minutes to kick in, then she would eat. Paws crossed it works as well for Squallie.
So I should give it about 30 minutes before he eats? He gets it twice a day so one before breakfast and one before dinner, then?

I used it "permanently"....
it really makes a difference and there isn't really a down side....
they can build a tolerance over time so you may find sometimes you need a slight increase in it....
i gave a crumb up to a 1/4 of a pill at different need times....

My vet is starting him on 4mg tablets, he gets 2 mg each morning and night. Does that sound about right, dosage-wise?

Just 1/8 of a 4mg pill is usually enough.... ecid..... so you will have to experiment.

If I had given Shadow that much , she would have bugged me all day. It didn't take much for her, and sometimes
she would continue to ask for more food even tho' she just ate..... so you will have to find out how Squallie reacts to it.

I haven't been tuned in....
Have there been any nausea issues?

nausea is usually hard to recognize but he would ask for food, smell it, do this very subtle lip smack and turn away.....

if he is doing that....
i would also ask for ondansetron. it's a human drug so you get it at your own pharmacy, most vets don't have it in stock.

I gave 1/2 a pill twice a day. I don't think I could have cut them into eighths. It wasn't supposed to be permanent in her case but she needed it because she had nausea too. I gave the Ondansetron to her too (a 1/4 of a pill) twice a day at the same time as Cypro. They would both kick in around the same time and then she would eat. I've heard some people give Ondansetron first to calm down nausea, then the Cypro, then food.

Fortunately, I don't think Squallie has any nausea issues. Did your cats gain weight while they were on Cypro? Squallie eats most of the time, just not with any great enthusiasim, frequently not finishing meals. Lots of times he'll just take a couple of bites and walk away. He's lost about 1 1/2 pounds since the beginning of the year.

We used the ondansetron cyproheptadine cocktail for our FD kitty Zener, who also had IBD and CKD. It worked very well for a long time. We cut the 4mg cyproheptadine pills into quarters, then halved the quarters, often it really was just a crumb. He did develop a tolerance after a while and we had to increase the dose. It was a great relief for us to know that once they cyproheptadine kicked in, ne would eat, so we were able to avoid skipping shots when his appy was absent at shot time.
