For the first time in 6 weeks! Got home from class, tested, meter said HI, went to give his shot and the second I touched his skin with the needle he sharply turned his face toward me like he was going to bite. Tried a different site, same thing. Drew it up into a new syringe, same thing. Went to grab my roommate to help me restrain him and he freaked when I wrapped him in a towel so I threw a treat at him which he ate. I was able to sneak the shot into his flank while he ate...and he gave me such a non-response about it that I smelled his fur to make sure the insulin actually made it in.

Do kitties get in bad moods about this?? Completely caught me off guard. Probably his high numbers tonight making him feel like crap too. His glucose curve is next week and I still plan to ask for a RX for Lantus at that time. Now he's sweetly creeping up my thigh acting like I can't see him trying to steal my pizza. As if his numbers aren't high enough. Yes, cat, you want pepperoni or meat lovers?

Sometimes the acidity of lantus will sting--this happens with Dre sometimes....for us it seems to happen less when he is hydrated.

When a kitty has high glucose levels they can feel very miserable. It sounds like Diego was feeling like "crap" and anything would have bothered him. My kitty gets very snarky and does not want to be touched when he is in higher numbers. Poor guy :(

I've usually been shooting at +10 so they never have an opportunity to get that high but I had class tonight and couldn't until +12. His doctor wants me to keep him on this new dosage of 2u and says it takes a minimum of ten days for the body to learn how to use the insulin. I think that's BS. But I'm following her instructions and even taking him in for a curve like she asked next week once he's been on this dosage for a while, which I could easily do myself at home for free. I've been doing everything she says to do and I feel like it's pretty reasonable for her to listen to my end and put him on Lantus next, using the data she's collected from the curve. I won't be comfortable until she does. If I can't get a yes from her this time around I'll be switching offices as much as I'd hate to do it...this clinic is by far my most affordable option.

Looking at Diego's spreadsheet it seems the Novalin is not working well for him. If it were my kitty I would definitely be inclined to switch to Lantus or Levemir.

A new dose of insulin may take a few days to "settle in" but since Novalin is an in and out insulin I can't understand the reasoning of 10 days for him to adjust to the dose change. And doing a curve at the vets could be unreliable if Diego is prone to stress. You definitely have more patience with your vet than I would.

:bighug:

ETA I am not familiar with Novolin but it was my understanding that the dosing with Novolin was based largely on the preshot numbers on a sliding scale basis. I may be wrong but that is what I understood????

Running real thin. Been trying to keep calm and not start any wars yet. I have a very, very important test coming up in 2 days and I can't be stressing about the cat's vet right now as irresponsible and unmotherly as that sounds. I can't be much help to him when we're both living in a box under a bridge because I didn't get into nursing school. Once that's over, I'll fight his battle. I may give the front office a call tomorrow AM and mention the HI reading I got that, according to her, shouldn't be happening anymore and state ONCE AGAIN that I want his insulin switched and I want her to call me back before I end up with a dead cat.

Get your test out of the way and then concentrate on getting your vet on board with you or finding a new vet. If you are not already it would be advisable to check for ketones with his numbers running higher the way they have been.

I have no idea. Would make more sense that way

Okay--I reflected on which course of action I want to take. Diego looks and is acting completely miserable tonight. He looks stoned and he's just sleeping or laying around, only getting up to drink more water and lie back down.

I am composing an email to the vets office right now. I included his entire spreadsheet along with my explicit written desire to get him switched to an insulin that actually works before he ends up dead due to a doctor's negligence to act quickly enough. They'll have every single one of my thoughts on this issue in black and white electronic form by the end of the night and, in the morning, I will call them to let them know that I've sent it and I'll be waiting for the doctor to give me a call regarding this issue. Otherwise I'm just going to have to figure out how to afford another vet.

In my email I also canceled his appointment on the 17th for his curve. I stated that due to the amount of stress he's been under and the already compromised state of a diabetic's immune system, I don't feel it would be wise to dump him at the vet for 12 hours, and that once his doctor works with me to get his values get under control and his patterns predictable, I will reschedule.
