Hi Everyone :cat:

My last time posting here was 2012 when my cat Neko was first diagnosed. Firstly, thank you all for the support and advice back then. When his diabetes resurfaced again this week, I googled for this message board and was so relieved to see it still very active!

Back in 2012, Neko only had to take insulin shots for 2 weeks and was OTJ for a good 4 year streak. He's 16 now and I noticed a significant drop in weight a short while ago. Then this week, he was also very constipated. So off to the vet I went where they performed an enema on him and after some tests told me he had diabetes again. This was only 2 days ago. I took him home on Thursday night.

He was on 0.01 of Lantus at the vet's and this morning at home read 19.7 so I called and they advised to give him 0.005 (half of the first line on a 0.3ml syringe). I gave him his shot and took another reading 4 hours later. It read 18.5. Then another 4 hours later it read 19.6....

At this point I called my vet again and they said I might have shot more air than insulin into him and to come down the following morning so they could show me how to draw such a tiny amount. Meanwhile, they told me to give his ears a break and not to give him a shot anymore.

5 hours later (9.30pm), Neko still hadn't eaten since early in the morning. I grew concerned about his high BG going unchecked so I did a check and it was down to 13.1

He also started eating a good portion right after that reading (Natures Variety Instinct Lamb)...

Is it common for a cat's BG to go down that much on their own with minimal assistance from insulin? Is 19.6 to 13.1 even considered a big drop? Any ideas what could be going on here?

Right now, I really do want to give his ears a break..so I'll do another reading in the morning before I drop by the vet for my injection lessons.

Any thoughts on what could be happening would be appreciated :)

Hi Everyone,

Long story short...after I posted here, Neko spent 2 full days at the vet because they thought his numbers on the Lantus insulin were moving too drastically. He'd drop as low as 2 and have to be given glucose and fluids. So, they've switched him to vetsulin and was doing quite well on it on Saturday day time.

Here's where my stupidity has thrown rocks down his road to recover. I got neko back from the vet with instructions to give him 1U of vetsulin at 9pm and to do a 2-3 hour curve thereafter (12am, 3am and 6am - 9am)...but only before checking his BG. It read 18.8 and was within what the vet said it would be so I prepped the syringe and gave him his shot.

The trouble begins here when I'm pretty sure I missed and most of it landed on his fur. Now his readings are all over the place and I'm afraid, I'll have to tell my vet how much I've messed up. :arghh:

9pm 18.8
12am 18.7
2am 15.5
3am 21.3 <- this was a random check because

I don't know what to do. I'll of course tell my vet about my mistake in the morning, but the sharp rise in an hour has me so confused and sad and...I just feel terrible. What should I hope for by 5 or 6 am?

I think I'll have to call into the vet much earlier this morning if it remains high or goes up even higher.

I can't really offer any advice or anything, but what I can say is that you shouldn't beat yourself up about a furshot. In fact, you did the right thing by not injecting more. Just know that the lovely people on here will do all they can to advise the best they can. You're looking out for your kitty simply by knowing something is amiss and posting here for help.

Thank you Lily-Fish for the response. I did start to feel a little better with myself as the night wore on. I was quite shaken..when I made that mistake. The accumulating vet fees (we're just under 3k now in Singapore Dollars)...his weight loss, I think all of that went through my mind when I was about to give him his shot and I just got so preoccupied I didn't do it well.

Anyway, his final reading at 6am this morning is 21.2. It's not ideal, but it seems like for today at least, we've gotten away with just upsetting my vets, rather than a crash due to OD and I can redo his curve around 9/10am again.

My only other worry beside his readings..is that he hasn't eaten all night. He is very curious though and has taken strolls throughout the apartment..he's walked around me a few times already. I hope, his appetite comes back when I get a second chance at doing his curve in the day time.

Sorry, I hope that didn't seem too crazy sounding and I apologize for the abundant typos in my post before this one.

Have same problem Skunky not eating since yesterday
Is there any chance you could post a new thread on Feline Health about this with a title along the lines of "Help Needed: Skunky not eating". That way more members will be able to see that you need help and you'll get more replies to your post.

In your opening post on your new thread it would help if you could let members know when Skunky was diagnosed, when he started insulin treatment, which insulin he is receiving and at what dosage.

Will keep a look-out for your new thread (and a hearty welcome to you both!).

If your vet thinks you "messed up" they need to deal, fur shots happen. Just reset and try to do a curve at the next opportunity.
