Hi Everyone
My last time posting here was 2012 when my cat Neko was first diagnosed. Firstly, thank you all for the support and advice back then. When his diabetes resurfaced again this week, I googled for this message board and was so relieved to see it still very active!
Back in 2012, Neko only had to take insulin shots for 2 weeks and was OTJ for a good 4 year streak. He's 16 now and I noticed a significant drop in weight a short while ago. Then this week, he was also very constipated. So off to the vet I went where they performed an enema on him and after some tests told me he had diabetes again. This was only 2 days ago. I took him home on Thursday night.
He was on 0.01 of Lantus at the vet's and this morning at home read 19.7 so I called and they advised to give him 0.005 (half of the first line on a 0.3ml syringe). I gave him his shot and took another reading 4 hours later. It read 18.5. Then another 4 hours later it read 19.6....
At this point I called my vet again and they said I might have shot more air than insulin into him and to come down the following morning so they could show me how to draw such a tiny amount. Meanwhile, they told me to give his ears a break and not to give him a shot anymore.
5 hours later (9.30pm), Neko still hadn't eaten since early in the morning. I grew concerned about his high BG going unchecked so I did a check and it was down to 13.1
He also started eating a good portion right after that reading (Natures Variety Instinct Lamb)...
Is it common for a cat's BG to go down that much on their own with minimal assistance from insulin? Is 19.6 to 13.1 even considered a big drop? Any ideas what could be going on here?
Right now, I really do want to give his ears a break..so I'll do another reading in the morning before I drop by the vet for my injection lessons.
Any thoughts on what could be happening would be appreciated
