IS that good? do I still give her her shot? after reading about those going into hypo and what their cat went through I am afraid
what is normal bg on a human meter for a cat?

It's not terribly low, but we usually tell new people not to shoot under 150 unless they have a little more data and there's someone here with experience to watch over you

Do you have plenty of test strips and high carb food in the house?

I'd make sure to get a +1 (test 1 hour after the shot) and a +2 so we can keep track of her and intervene early if we need to

Edited to add:

You might want to go ahead and get another test in 30 minutes....we don't have any data on Gato so we don't know anything about her yet and we want to keep her safe

ok ty, no I don't have any high carb food, should I go buy a small bag of dry somewhere just in case it is still low after 1 hour? what kind should I get?

No, don't get dry......do you have Karo, honey or syrup in the house?

It's always a good idea to keep some high carb food around, like Fancy Feast Gravy Lovers for "emergencies" though....it's better at keeping their numbers up if we need them up instead of the simple sugars like Karo

Dry food takes too long to break down and get into the bloodstream, so we use things that will work quicker

I do have honey, I am going to get some fancy feast gravy just in case, and some more strips so fancy feast gravy is best to get?

yeah, the carbs are in the gravy, so if we need to use it, we pop the top, put it back down on the can and then "squeeze" the gravy into another bowl so we can give a few teaspoons of just the gravy

We don't want to overfeed them in case we need them to continue to eat, but we want to give them enough to bring them above 50 if they drop below that

is there were we can just message each other back and forth instead of posting?

No....and I'm hoping others will be along to help keep an eye on you too

One of the main "rules" of the message board is that all advice should be public....ANY one person, no matter how much experience they may have, can miss something important and give bad advice....by having several sets of eyes on you, we keep your kitty safer

We don't give the high carb food unless they drop below 50...Yes, you shot a lower number than usual (without much data) but she may be just fine

That's why I said to make sure to get at least a +1 and +2 in and let's see how she does

That's great!!!....Now don't feed her anymore, but get another test in at +1 and +2

This could just be a "food spike" from getting fed, so we still need to keep an eye on her.

Keep your subject line updated....Most of us do it this way

3/4 Gato, AMPS 238, PMPS 103,+.5 121

As you get new test numbers in, add them to the subject line so when we scan the forum, we can easily see how she's doing

If she drops below 50, you can add the 911 "prefix" to get help quickly

I am just very upset that my vet didn't explain any of this to me, she didn't inform me about testing before shots, and what number is getting low

I am just very upset that my vet didn't explain any of this to me, she didn't inform me about testing before shots, and what number is getting low

That's pretty normal around here....Most vets just say "Give X units of insulin and bring them back in 2 weeks for a curve" and send you out the door

so should I check her an hour from the last time I checked her or 30 min? which would be 1hr form the first test?

and tomorrow morning if she is low again like that again what should I do?

Don't forget to keep your spreadsheet updated too

Right now it doesn't have that you shot the 1U or the newer test results....Most people are going to want to look at the spreadsheet's before offering any advice

Oh....you put the 121 into the AMPS +1 cell....we're over on the PMPS side now I think (unless you're on the other side of the world from me...I'm in the US)

it went up some more 124 now, 2 hours since the first test
so just a question when I test her and she is under 150 what do do? feed her and test again? when do I give her a shot if I do at all

If she's under 150 at Pre-shot time, stall, don't feed and post for help

Retest in 20-30 minutes to see if she's coming up on her own without any food....that lets you know that the insulin is probably wearing off and it'll be OK to shoot a little late

It's important for you to start getting some mid-cycle tests in too....If at all possible, at least 1 test somewhere around AMPS +5 to +7 and then on the PM cycle, you always want to at least get a "before bed" test in.

Most cats go lower at night, so it's important to get that last test in before you sleep so if she's running low, you can set an alarm to get up and get another test in late

ok well I work leave house around 730 am and get home about 3:30 should I test her then? I usually test her around 7 am and feed her then, I can test her at 630 when I get up so that will give her time if she is low

I am going to test her again in a hour right before I go to bed..is it good that she is going up? not a lot but some

Since we don't have any mid-cycle tests on her yet, we have no idea when her nadir is (Nadir is the lowest point in the cycle)

At what point in the cycle do you usually go to bed? +3 or +4?

I go to bed around 10-11 depends how tired I am, sometimes I feed her a small amount of ff when I go to bed, because she seems really hungry by that time since I feed her at 7, and she was losing weight so vet said I could feed her more food 1-2 cans of the DM which is 5.5 ounces

times don't tell us a lot around here since we're all from all over the world

10-11 is how long since her shot? About 3 or 4 hours, right? (+3 to +4)

yeah the first one was at 7:15 pm my time and the most recent one as at 10:57pm and it was 117 so that is about 3.5 hrs in between

Is there any way you can set an alarm and maybe get a test about midnight to 1am?

But yes, you can give her some regular low carb food

That would be great if you could....Like I said earlier, when you can't get many tests during the day, it's even more important at night

We want to try to find out when she usually has her nadir....once we do, we can be more sure of when she's done dropping

what number should I feel safe to go to sleep, she seems to be acting normal, just walking around sleeping on the carpet and watching me

We just need to make sure he's done dropping

Nadir is "usually" around +6, so as long as he doesn't keep dropping, I think he'll be fine after that

Because you don't have any data on Gato, there's just no way I could say "go to sleep and don't worry about it" right now, especially since you shot a lower PS than you've ever shot before
