I joined FDMB when my cat was first diagnosed in March 2014. I was very fortunate that a quick change of diet from dry to wet food took her OTJ very quickly. I was mostly a lurker then but learned so much from all of you.

Unfortunately Bama was put back on insulin in September 2015 after showing classic diabetes symptoms again. Only a few days of insulin she ended up in the kitty hospital for pancreatitis. As her pancreatitis symptoms cleared her bg was starting to normalize but was was still a bit higher than I'd like. Then her numbers went wonky in December! I got a new bottle of insulin to see if it was the insulin or Bama that was having trouble... it was Bama. Her most recent blood tests are showing a loss of kidney function which is what brings me here today. I will be making a post in the main forum later today with more information in the hopes of deciding what forms of treatment to pursue.

I have also been dealing with health problems of my own for the past few months so I haven't been able to focus on Bama's troubles as much as I would like. For several weeks my husband was doing all of the testing and injections and while he has been a big help we realized there was quite a difference in how we measured and administered doses. This time around I haven't even been lurking on the forums unless I had a specific question. Now that my health issues are improving I'm hoping to help Bama improve hers as well.
 
My kitty is recently out of remission, too, as well as some others. It is disappointing, isn't it? I'm happy your health issues are improving, I can imagine how difficult care-taking can be if you are not well. It is just a suspicion at this point, and not at all proven or even likely, but I've taken Blu off of Fancy Feast (that is all he ate once diagnosed and throughout his remission) as some of the other recently-out-of-remission kitties were also eating FF. Though, it seems like many people use the FF option as it's affordable and easily accessible. If I see any remarkable changes with the diet switch over the next couple of weeks I'll certainly post in the main forum. FF is probably fine, but figured it can't hurt to be sure by trying a different food with Blu just to rule it out. I hope Bama feels better very soon!

Also if you are going to keep feeding canned food you need to check the phosphorus content of the food and keep it under 2oo mgm/ 100 calories, and keep the carbs under 10. Weruva brand has some suitable foods and comprehensive info on food content charts attached

Interesting... I took a quick look around the forum and I see what you are talking about but I don't see a direct correlation with Bama. I haven't been keeping track of when I switch to new food batches (or the batch numbers) but I was able to look up when I bought her food. She actually started to come out of remission just before I bought a new batch of food. Then she went wonky at the end of November also just before I bought new food.

I started feeding FF because it was one of the few foods I tried that she would actually eat reliably. Poor Bama isn't the brightest and had some trouble figuring out how to eat wet food. She actually seemed surprised by the food in her mouth and couldn't quite figure out what to do with it; her reaction was reminiscent of a dog with peanut butter.

So far I am not seeing any change with the new food. I just wanted to make sure so i'll continue for awhile. I LOL'd at the description of Bama trying the wet food AHAHAHA
 
Bron - Thank you for linking the food chart! I got to be pretty familiar with that chart the first time around but I wasn't good at remembering where it was linked. There sure isn't much of a choice in low carb and low phosphorus... no wonder people are making their own food.

It is so refreshing to see a company actually post ALL of the nutritional information for their food! Bama wouldn't eat Weruva when I switched her from dry to wet food; she is a gravy licker and doesn't quite understand the concept of chunks. I did get her to eat Tiki cat once, but only once. I looked up Tiki and some of their newer varieties are low in phosphorus. They have also added actual nutrition info but phosphorus is listed at the end under "Veterinary Renal Disease Reference" http://www.tikipets.com/petropics-nutrition-facts/
 
My cats really didn't like the chunks too. I primarily use Wellness Turkey and Wellness Chicken both free of grains. It is close to 200mng phosphorous and 4% carbs. I used others that have chunks so I would put in my blender to smooth it out. Then they would eat it with no problem.

There is a great list posted that had low carbs and phosphorous content. In the full list, FF had really high phosphorous. The list below is NOT the full list but only has food that is less than 250 phosphorous In case you have not seen it, here it is. If you want the full list, I can send it to you. Many people get their food from www.chewy.com. Merlin had Stage 3 CKD and I tried to feed him close to 200 mg phosphorous (1%).
