Happy Christmas Eve, L&L Land!
and Happy Christmas, to the Aussies!

yesterday we started Clavamox for an unknown bacterial infection. And apparently started a bounce at the same time.

I believe that the fortiflora is techincally considered a probiotic, but I think most people here use it more as a topper to get kitties to eat.

Skooter also has IBD, so the IBD group that I belong to advocates for using a human grade probiotic. Skooter is on Nexabiotic....he gets half a tab mixed into his second meal of each cycle....

Within 6 hours of the first dose, Pimp's glucose skyrocketed. They are tablets and shouldn't have sugar in them. I have read that antibiotics affecting gut flora can wreak havoc on glucose levels in humans (no information found for cats).

I think this may have been discussed in your condo from yesterday, but I would be a bit hesitant to draw the conclusion the two are related based on one reading....we are mostly looking for trends and looking at the big picture...even if the trend is higher readings, it still may not be related to the antibiotic, but possibly the infection itself...

I just didn't expect a bounce from mid 100's, I thought he was used to those levels by now.
If only our kitties would read the rule book on what they are supposed to do, it would make our lives so much easier....Skooter still refuses to read it....

Now Pimp, let's get down off the pink floor and slide back on down to at least blues....

Hope Pimp puts his blue jeans back on today. Sorry if I harped on the AB yesterday and hope you weren't offended. I need to keep my mouth shut and hope he feels better. The fortiflora is to help with appy stimulation and keep the "gut" inline while on the AB so as long as he's eating it should be fine.

Morning Andy :coffee::coffee::coffee:

Merry Christmas! I hope you and yours have a wonderful holiday. :)

Bummer on that amps! I suspect a bounce too, could be the AB's also, or a combo of the two. Mannie always was a bit higher when dealing with AB's, esp the clavamox. It also affected his LB... One of the tings I did was feed him some Greek yogurt (plain, with active bacteria), he was such a dairy fan. I will help with tummy issues and the LB, should overly soft poo's be an issue. You have to feed it however a couple of hours after the AB's as the active bacteria in it will be destroyed by the AB's, so don't give them at the same time. With Mannie, it was a treat a couple of times during the cycle, 4+ hours after the AB's. it really helped him, no more tummy issues or LB problems.

Good luck, and be well Pimp!

Not basing anything on one number. Something drove him up, I'm a why person, just trying to figure out the cause. If it's a bounce, it's a bounce, if it's from infection, then so-be-it...just asking opinions and input on the unexpected crazy numbers. I know I can't necessarily control it but that doesn't stop me from being curious to the cause, if there is one.
Thanks for your input:)

You're good, Karen ;)
I don't mind being given things to think about, that's what the Board is for, right?
We all do things a little bit differently and there's nothing wrong with sharing opinions, they are always welcome in my condo whether I agree or not.

Thanks for the Christmas wishes Michelle:) Right back at ya:)
I know probiotics shouldn't go down at the same time as AB's, does it matter which goes first? Or do they just need to be a few hours apart?

Hoping Pimp throws you better numbers the rest of the cycle. Just curious: Why does the vet think he has an unknown bacterial infection? ( I am a "why" person too)

I know folks on the yahoo lists use acidophilus without sugar or milk when taking antibiotics themselves or giving them to their cats. They give a little spread out over each meal.

Happy holidays.

High white blood cell count, indicates infection or parasite of some type, non specific.
There are different types of white blood cells, that seek out different types of "invaders". The specific types that had raised levels both go after bacteria.
This is what I've figured out from studying his labs, and doing some research.
The vet just said "We need to get him on antibiotic ASAP."
I think it is probably more important to get the infection cleared up, to prevent high risk of DKA, than figuring out exactly what/where it is. Clavamox is supposed to be a good broad-spectrum AB.

If you're so inclined, The Merk Veterinary Manual is online. (See my signature link Notes to share). There's lots of good info in there, though you may need a medical dictionary. I find it helpful in preparing for a vet visit, as being well informed about feline health may help the vet to trust what you're doing with the diabetes, or any other chronic or acute conditions.

Thanks BJ, I was starting to look at that when I fell asleep last night:)
Hey Andy, sorry to hear that Pimp has an infection, I hope the AB start doing there job and Pimps BG come downsoon.
Thanks Gill. I'm not sure if we caught it just coming on or what, he hasn't acted like anything's wrong, and the vet said he "looked" good on Tuesday. I don't know if his BG's are related to the infection or just a bounce.

my 2 cents… we use micro flora by Herbsmith -the vet who makes them is Dr Bessent (in Wisconsin) and she is pretty awesome. It is a probiotic/prebiotic/enzymes and herbs all in 1 capsule-
I open the capsule and mix about 1/3 of it with baby food and syringe (a 3 cc syringe) it breaks the food down very fast to liquid so it digests easier which is great but I have to get it down him fast-he gets 1 of those and one syringe with 1/2 a pancreatrophin by Standard process -2x a day with meals…His tummy has been really good about a week after we started this and his amalyse and lipase are completely normal on last cbc ;) I would give opposite times as AB before or after-
Santa is coming soon!!!!!

Hi Andy - Morry christmas too you! I don't think it matters which some first... For us it was AB's, and a few hours after that the probiotics, followed by more a few hours after that. It was just the way it worked best for us, when I was home etc. it just seemed logical for me to do it that way.
