Update: Brandy is a 7 year old cat I adopted from the Humane Society around June. I took her because she looked so sad in her photo and I thought no one would want her because most want a kitten. I found out a few days in that she is diabetic (yaaaay lol)

Well, it's still a challenge for us with our schedules,$$ etc., but I'm happy to report that Brandy is doing much much better lately! She plays with our kitten and the other cats! She is 7! and the difference in her is incredible! I thought that she wasn't strong enough to jump up to the other cat's food because she's overweight (though I do know about neuropathy), but I guess it was the diabetes. (That does present a new problem-she can now reach their dry food. we can't manage to feed all of them only canned)

Anyway, she is so much more lively. She is so happy! It is really nice to see. She fell asleep purring in my lap last night in my blanket, like she always does. She rubs all over my leg lately when I come home (that is new) She sleeps by my feet or my pillow every night.

She acts like she really loves us, especially me. She loves my husband too though. She follows me around sometimes. She plays with the toys and is so much more energetic. The only symptom remaining (I think. I work) is the urine amount, though that has decreased A LOT from what I've seen.

Her numbers lately are mainly in the blue and a few green! She is on 2 units of prozinc. I have been scared to increase it to bring her lower. She is doing very well though! Brandy is a sweet girl. I don't know how her other owners left her after 7 years. Maybe they knew. Maybe they couldn't afford it. I don't know. I guess I can't judge and I definitely understand the struggle, but what I do know is she is sweet and we love her. I am so happy she is feeling a lot better!!

Thanks for all of the info here!

Hi Smiley! What a great update! I'm so glad Brandy has found such a loving happy home with you. It's soooo good to hear how well she's doing! I laughed to hear about her jumping up to the other cats food. :) Keep on surfing the blues and greens, Brandy!

Thanks! Yeah, I heard she was up on the counter and I thought - uh oh lol I couldn't find her one night and she had managed to climb up all these shelves into a cupboard I have. I had put a cat bed in there for one of the older cats. She got her but right up there and was in heaven (that's her profile picture) lol

I'm thrilled to hear that Brandy is doing so well! I know you had some concerns about keeping her, but I'm so glad you did, and have given her a loving home that allows her to flourish! You saved her life, and she will love you forever. :):):)

Thanks for the kind words. It is still hard for us, but we are trying our best and she is a real sweetheart. Her coat has improved tremendously also. When I got her her blood glucose was 460 ish and her fur was kinda greasy. She's a beautiful girl. I always thought that though. Sometimes she's grouchy, but even then she's so cute :)

You haven't seen grouchy 'til you've met Bojangles! She's relaxed a bit in the 10 years that I've owned her, but she still jumps/swats at her grandmother on occasion and she hates whistling. My father has learned not to whistle near her - must bother her ears. She'll come at you full tooth and claw if you whistle near her, but would be a good way to find her in an emergency - she'll come running!

Thank you for adopting a humane society kitty. I have my Waimea as it was love at first sight on the internet. She was 11 (so a senior kitty), black, and blind (they had to remove her eyes due to I believe really bad cataracts). She had three strikes against her poor little girl. She'd been at the humane society 1.5 years and I was the first to ask about her. She's a love bug and a bit of a drooler (yes, a drooler - sometimes it's like a faucet when she's happy).

My girls are kept separate due to Waimea's blindness and Bojangles' grumpiness - she doesn't play well with others - but Waimea had her own room at the Humane Society for 1.5+ years and has had her own room at my house for nearly 2 years now. Gotta love our grumpy and/or humane society kitties!

Such a heartwarming story - thanks for sharing
Didn't the humane society tell you she was diabetic, or don't you think they knew?
No. they did not know. They said she would never have been placed for adoption in the first place. She would have been put down. That is what they offered when I found out. They just don't have the resources for diabetics. The humane society said she was with the same owners for 7 years and they brought her in saying they were divorcing and neither of them could keep her. I don't know if the owners knew or not.

LOL Got your hands full! Well, this is the same humane society I got my dog from and 3 other cats besides Brandy over the years. One lived to be over 21 years old. Gizmo was his name. My kennel pets have all been awesome

Well, bless you - that must have been very difficult for you - I can only imagine
I am so happy that this worked out so well for both of you - again this story has really made my day

I applaud anybody who takes in a rescue or shelter kitty. Imagine some of the terrible, sad tales those kitties could tell, if they could speak. It wonderful when a loving person comes along and gives them the good life that every cat deserves. My little girl is a rescue, and I know some of her story; she endured circumstances that will affect her for the rest of her life now, poor baby, and she was only 10 months old when I adopted her. I can't bear to think of what might have happened to her if she'd been in that situation any longer than she was.

You have to appreciate a humane society that 1) will work with an area vet to provide the kind of surgery Waimea had and 2) keep her for 1.5 years until she found a home. She's an a amazing girl and I'm glad they didn't put her down with her challenges. One of my local vets is more of a large animal vet (horse/cattle). He provided one of Waimea's first exams and he was fascinated with her. He even googled the YouTube video about her that the humane society posted. He was practically in tears about her - he ran out to stop me from pulling away (I didn't know they were watching the video). He's not known for his "bedside manner" with kitties, but there was something about Waimea's story...as the story goes "the Grinch's small heart grew three sizes that day."

Wonderful that things are working out! Great that you showed your local humane society the people are willing to adopt and love diabetic cats and they don't have to be putting them down for a treatable disease.

These are spendy as all heck, but its what we use to make it work with dry food eaters in the same house as diabetics. Sureflap Microchip Feeder You can scan multiple pets to one feeder so you can get just one for all the dry food eaters to share. If your cats aren't chipped, it comes with a pet tag for the collar. The first one we got was such a blessing, we got a second so we could have one on each floor of the house. I LOVE them.

Well, we will have to look into that! Thanks for the tip! :)
