I picked up my foster cat Andy from the vet yesterday. They put him on ProZinc 6 units 2 x day. Last night he tested at 240 - gave 6 units. This morning he was 401 - gave 6 units. This evening he was 459 - gave 7 units but he jerked and I missed a little. A friend thinks 6 units is really high. I am not familiar with this newer ProZinc as my experience was 10 yrs ago. I was given Purina DM wet and dry and told he eats 1/2 5.5oz can plus abt a heaping Tablespoon dry. He is not a large cat. I don't feed my other cats that much volume but I never used the DM product so in the dark here. Any gut reaction on all of this? At this point, I am following drs orders ........

I never give dosing advice, but my cat Goof' s first BG was 652, my vet started with 1 unit, twice daily. The highest I ever gave was 3 units twice daily.

Hey, I gave a response on the other thread. 240 preshot is only 40 points higher than a NO Shot number for a newly diabetic cat. 6n units is way to much. How do you feel about starting over at 1 unit and posting daily on ProZinc Forum for help with dosing? I think you are in good hands here and the experienced peeps here will really be able to help you. I am so glad that you are home testing.

If he was my cat, I would not hesitate to do this. I am communicating with a board member at the shelter to see what she thinks. This poor guy spent over a month at the vet clinic, started on Lantus and could not get regulated so switched to PZI about a week ago. I will do more testing in the meantime. Thank you so much.

If you are only getting preshots levels, he could be dropping very low at mid cycle and then bouncing back up. (A bounce is when the body perceives a lower number than normal and releases extra glucose, making the next test higher than normal.

You can see if the dose is too high by getting a test 5-7 hours after the shot. We consider a cat regulated if they are in the mid 200s at pre shot and in double digits at nadir (usually 5-7 hours after the shot) but not below 50 on a human meter, which is approaching hypo numbers.

A restart could certainly be in order. The dry could be elevating his numbers somewhat, but if he is dropping low mid cycle, he is on a roller coaster of highs and lows.

The protocol we put together for ProZinc is in my signature in blue.

Would the board member at the shelter be willing to take a look at this board? We'd certainly be happy to speak with her and see if we could help her understand how ProZinc should be dosed!

This morning he is 351. I gave the prescribed 6 units and will do a curve today. I only have Andy for 1+ days so not familiar with him yet. He is also on Tylan and probiotics for diarrhea. I will post this evening with the results on the prozinc thread. I also gave the link to the shelter. Thanks for helping.

Please get a number midcycle so you will have some information for the vet.

Just for reference, the only cats we have on this forum getting 6 units twice daily have high dose conditions. No normal diabetic needs that much insulin. The vast majority of cats here get 1 or 2 units twice daily.

ProZinc is a U40 insulin. So are you drawing up to the 6 unit marking on a U40 syringe (red cap). U100 syringes, used by humans have an orange cap and 6 units of ProZinc would be up to the 15 unit mark on a human syringe.

Larry - yes, right now 6 units on U40 syringe. I plan to convert to U100 when he belongs to me. He is currently a foster.
