Looking for a low carb canned food I can force feed my cat with a syringe when she won't eat on her own. I was giving her Fancy Feast Classic but it's not smooth enough to force feed. Suggestions?

They're the same.

Got a blender? Or a strainer?

Or, Stage 1 baby food, plain meat, no spices, no fruits, no vegetables.

For syringe feeding, the recovery/convalescence foods can be used, such as A/D (about 15% calories from carbohydrate).

No, it has a medium carb content.
When you're in the position of syringe feeding a cat, the priorities are food first, recovery second, and then worry about modifying the diet.

Royal Canin Recover RS is also low carb (7%) and great consistency for syringe feeding. You don't want to assist feed the same food as her regular food, or she may develop an aversion to it.

I find Wellness Chicken in the 3oz cans very easy to get smooth when I water it down. In the 5.5oz cans or the other flavors, the consistency changes and there are bigger chunks of carrot and pepper so its not as easy to get smooth.

Melanie, which Wellness product do you buy? The Core or Grain Free or another one? Thanks

I buy the regular Wellness Chicken Formula, which is grain free. Though I have used Chicken, Turkey, and Liver Core and think it would blend smoothly pretty easily too.

Does she like the fancy feast? If you add water to it and put it in a food processor it will be easier to syringe. When Max won't eat I try Gerbers stage 2 meat baby food. He will lap it up but it also is easy to syringe. Some syringes work better than others as well.

I made my own for a while, when I was on palliative care duty for my cat with diabetes. I used a blender in which I blended his regular prescription Royal Canin S/O Diabetic wet food with a bit of "cat milk" (found this product at the pet store...it's not really milk, but milk-like liquid food supplement that cats can actually process). The liquid made it easier to force-feed with a syringe.

So far, Wellness is working very well with syringe feedings. I do wish Wellness would leave out the carrots and peppers or whatever the black stuff is. I have to pluck them out but it beats blending up cat food. I find it hard to blend up Fancy Feast. So far, my cat usually eats that on her own.

keep in mind that anything you syringe feed they will develop an aversion too.... so try not to use favorite foods.

recently some of us have discovered goats milk.... Primal makes one, you have to call around to find a store that carries it....

My cat hasn't developed an aversion to anything I syringe feed her with and I've been doing this a long time to get her meds down. But I do need other smooth low carb options besides Wellness Chickien for variety. Is Wellness Turkey a good low carb chocie?

I used it until I couldn't afford it for the number of cats in the house, so it should be OK.

Iams Maximum Calorie Plus is 9% and over 55 calories an ounce. It has a very soft texture, good for syringe feeding. And if you are syringe feeding you probably need the extra calories, you also don't need to get nearly as much into him.

Looks like this has Rice (Brewer's Rice), which I thought was supposed to be avoided. If so, I'd imagine this would be better as a med carb?
