Happy Caturday LL!

So far so good with the new dose. Hopefully the next few days will show whether this reduction will stick or not. Eddie and his older brother Reekoe had their annual vetty visits this morning, which went well. We had senior panels run on both, and should get the results on Monday.

Our vet is less than a 10 minute drive away, but civie Reekoe peed in the carrier on the way to the vet, and Eddie peed in the carrier on the way home.

I gave them a color printout of Eddie's SS, and they were very impressed with Eddie's recent numbers! Not surprisingly, our vet suggested that we cut back to testing only 3 times a day. *Nods and smiles.* I could tell she was skeptical about our miniscule doses and said she only adjusts doses in half unit increments. She also suggested that we could probably just stop insulin and see if he stays normal. However, she also respects what we're doing with TR and supports our dosing decisions. She gave me a paper prescription for more Lantus pens so we can try our first order with Marks. I almost walked out of the appointment without the prescription! Everything else looks good with Eddie except his teeth! He has some pretty significant plaque and tartar and with her holding Eddie's mouth open, I could see that his gum line is a little red in the back where the tartar is located, but she said that there's nothing else major that's obvious. I'll have to study up now on dentals, but she indicated that in addition to the cleaning that needs to be done, they'll do x-rays while anesthetized and deal with anything else that might show up on x-ray. So, we'll be working on scheduling Eddie's dental after I'm done with my surgery, and after our other kitties have their annual visits.

I'm mortified to even tell you guys how much civilian Reekoe weighed when we brought them both in for check-ups last year when Eddie was diagnosed. 26 pounds. For years we fed "light" dry food thinking eventually Reekoe would lose weight, but he just kept gaining weight. We've been keeping tabs of his weight on our home scale, but got validation today at his check up and he clocked in 6 pounds lighter! He has more to lose to get to his 16 or so ideal weight, but it's progress and we're proud of that! With his weight, we were also concerned about arthritis, etc., last year, and hoped that weight loss would help with his comfort, but he's still sore, so we're starting cosequin for him and baby aspirin. Interestingly, Reekoe does not need a dental and his teeth look "great" according to our vet.

Have a good Caturday everyone!

Nice report for both kitties. Love the "nods and smiles." I suspect many of us have fine-tuned to perfection that response to our vet's suggestions.

Excellent weight loss for Reekoe. Slow and steady. Good job.

Hey, Eddie. I see a dental in your future. Imagine how much more handsome you'll be with a set of sparklies to show off each time you smile.

More good wishes for your surgery.

Marilyn

Eddie's is looking splendid as usual today. :D Was that +5 after the vetty visit?

Ah yes, "nods and smiles". There's a point where I tune out that same conversation.

That little red line on the gum is indeed telling. I'm glad to hear that your vet does X-rays first and that you will be scheduling a dental. Here is Sienne's excellent post on dentals. February is dental month, and I've seen a number of vets have specials then.

Great news on Reekoe and his better body. If you read Dr. Pierson's background on www.catinfo.org, feeding "weight loss" food to cats and the lack of results was one of her motivators for looking into feline nutrition.

Eddie's numbers are looking great. Sorry to hear he needs a dental, but it can only make him feel better. I'm glad Reekoe is losing weight.

I LOVE our vet, and the office is really cool in how it's set up. But, there's no separate waiting area for cats. The front entry way and waiting is designed to try to lets waiting patients have a little privacy, but unfortunately, as much as I love droolers, too many of their owners are kind of inconsiderate, and think it's OK to let their puppy run over to inspect and sniff the cat carriers, even though we have the carriers turned with the front turned around to try to shield them from the commotion. So, Eddie's post-vet AM +8 is a little high, not unexpectedly, as is his PMPS of 150. But he appears to be in a hurry to get back to normal numbers as his PM +2 is 81. :D I don't remember the vet saying anything about Eddie's teeth at last year's visit when he was diagnosed, but she might have and it didn't register since I was so overwhelmed with the diagnosis. Knowing how many kitties seem to need that dental as that last little push to OTJ, I'm hopeful. Maybe that's been part of the reason he was so darn hard to regulate for the first year.

Hi Marilyn! Thanks for visiting. Eddie's excited to get a bright new smile to flash at his favorite Pretty Polly! ;)

Hi Wendy! Eddie's +5 of 68 was right before we left this morning. His +8 right after we got home was 140. We had his test kit at the office with us, but didn't get an "at vet" reading. They didn't offer to test his BG this time, which is fine. Last time we brought him in to the vet this summer, our normal tech was not there, and after specifically telling them we didn't need a BG test on their Bayer Contour, they tested anyway, and charged us for it! Thank you so much for the link from Sienne on dentals. I know I'd seen that before, but it's super helpful to have it right here and handy. :) I wasn't aware of Dr. Pierson's background. That's really interesting! I don't doubt that the SD "light" played some role in Eddie's FD, and I do feel guilty that we didn't look into the nutritional issue sooner since Reekoe never, ever lost weight on the "weight loss" food.

Hi Carla! Thanks for your visit! Given that both Eddie and Reekoe are "seniors" - I expected sooner or later a dental would be needed. I'm glad though that it seems that a deep cleaning seems to be all that is needed at the moment. We have to get our other two civilians in too for their checkups, and I am a little worried about our civilian Princess and her teeth. She's only about 4 years old, but I remember despite being overwhelmed with Eddie's diagnosis, that the vet said her teeth are problematic. Something about some sort of congenital condition. I know her front teeth are spaced out kind of weird compared to our other cats, so she may be next in line for some dental work, too.

Hi Jen. Sounds like a pretty good vetty report, and a pretty good vetty. The facts that she doesn't really fight you for control of the FD and will write the prescription for you alone are reasons to keep her!

I'm glad Eddie made a fast recovery from his traumatic day. They have completely separate waiting rooms at the UCD Small Animal Clinic for dogs and all other animals, but the Oncology unit does not. My kitties have only ever seen droolers at the vet, but they don't seem to get to upset by them.

Perhaps Reekoe's arthritis will improve as he continues to lose weight. He's still got some to go, so don't lose hope.

Great numbers for Eddie! Poor boys....sounds like it wasn't so much fun for them.

Three times a day....ha! You are a bona fide member of Testaholics Anonymous.:cool:

We are facing a dental, too. Hate it but gotta be done. Good job with Reekoe. Hope the weight loss continues nice and slow.

Yep. For sure.:oops: When vetty asked how many times we're testing a day, I answered "it depends on his numbers...." but DH happily threw me under the bus, gleefully volunteering "10-12 times a day!!" I'm always a little tempted to put some sort of disclaimer when I'm posting to new beans that they should not look at Eddie's SS for fear that they will be scared off by the amount of testing I do.

Eddie continue to look amazing. One of my friends asked me last week what my vet has to say about all the testing I do. He doesn't think I need to test as much as I do but says I'm doing a terrific job managing the fd. I wonder how you will handle the trial when you test just twice a day. :)

Not sure if we still hold the record - 24 tests in 1 day, 19 of which were in one cycle! Of course that was when he was coming OTJ - after a dental ;)

Nearly peed myself at your kitties peeing antics on the way to and from the vet, I swear they do it as payback! Vyktor doesn't go in a carrier, on the way home from the vets after a stay of several days for DKA he went right in my lap and did not look in the slightest bit embarrassed!

Yay for Reekoe's weight loss :) and the otherwise good reports. Sending some early vines for the upcoming dental
