Zeus, 12/24, low AMPS!! Please help

Good morning everyone,

I’ve never seen this before and have no idea what to do.

AMPS numbers are 6.9 on pet meter and 5.5 on human meter.

Zeus is on lantus, 2U twice daily.

what do I do? I don’t feel comfortable giving him any insulin right now and can’t talk to a vet till later this afternoon.

It's good you gave some insulin. With a history of DKA, you do not want to completely skip the shot.

When faced with a lower preshot that usual, we suggest stalling without food for 20 mins and testing to see if the numbers are headed up. The downside of that is that numbers can continue to drop without food and make the shooting decision even more difficult.

If you can monitor, you can shoot any number over 5 with a human meter. With our more aggressive dosing method (TR), you can shoot any number over 2.8!

We are very data dependent here. Since you are home testing, I can help you set up the spreadsheet we use to track test data. It's very useful when we want to give dosing advice or advice on handling low preshots.

Thank you for the reassurance. When you say I can shot any number over 5 .. would I still be shooting his regular dose?

I do have a spreadsheet :) I’m just not all set up here on the forums yet but here’s the link

Yes. You can shoot the full dose over 5, especially if you can monitor. Lantus is very good at giving flat cycles when you shoot low. If you look at all the times you shot below 10, you've seen flat cycles. A preshot is not an indicator of how a cycle will play out. A cat can start a much higher levels and dip below 5! The size of the dose also does not affect a shooting decision if its a good dose for the cat. Zeus is looking good at 2U!

I don't know if you've seen this sticky with our dosing methods:
Dosing Methods: Start Low, Go Slow (SLGS) & Tight Regulation (TR)

In addition to updating your Spreadsheet, it would be a big help to us if you can set-up your signature? It's basically a summary of the information we need about your cat to give you advice. The spreadsheet and signature are the things we look at when asked for advice. It saves us asking you the same questions again and again especially when the question is time critical like stalling or low numbers. It also saves you the effort of giving us the information every time you post!

Here's how you can set-up your Signature:
  • In the Menu, under your user name, click on Signature.
  • Add info we need to help you:
    • Caregiver & kitty's name
    • DX: Date
    • Name of Insulin (do not include dose or frequency)
    • Name of your meter
    • Diet: "LC wet" or "dry food" or "combo"
    • Dosing: TR or SLGS or Custom (if applicable)
    • DKA or other recent health issue (if applicable)
    • Spreadsheet link. Please put the signature link on the bottom line of your signature information, on its own, so it is easy to find.
  • Please do not put any information about your location in the signature for security reasons. If you wish to add your country location, please add it to your profile.
  • There is a limit of two lines. You may separate info with commas, dashes, | etc.
  • Be sure to click the 'Save Changes' button at the bottom.

I see you are using a pet meter. That's a very important piece of information in your signature. We don't want your cat going below 68, and I see he did get to 72 yesterday. Depending on what dosing method you are following, that could mean his dose is too high.

One other request from you. When you post, could you do so in the us mg/dL units. Although many of us can speak both units, the majority of people here are from the US and the server for the message board is American, so we use their units as our standard. Thank you - it'll help you get help faster too.
