Yoda's ear drops have steroids in it.... have questions

During Yoda's dental today I had the vet clean out his ears. They pulled "half of Indiana" out of one ear :shock: I was given Derma-Vet ointment to put in Yoda's ears once a day for 10 days. I was reading the pamphlet and it says that it is a topical corticosteroid in addition to antibiotic and antifungal. Is this ok to put in his ears? The pamphlet says to give 3-5 drops once a day.
 
Some diabetic cats will react to ear drops containing steroids with higher BG levels. Sorry, I have never dealt with this personally so I cannot suggest alternatives.
 
Just keep an eye on his BGs. It is possible that he WON'T react too. Every cat is different.

When Norton was getting 5mg Pred daily, it did not affect his BGs at all.
 
It's a balance. The medicine MAY raise Yoda's BG or may not. You have to get his ears cleaned out to prevent infection, which also MAY raise his BG. It's only for 10 days - I'd use the medicine and keep an extra close eye on his numbers.
 
I have used both Animax and Tresaderm for my Twiggie's ears. Both contain steroids. Both caused Twiggies's BG to skyrocket to almost 500. The Tresaderm was worse, as expected because of the type of steroid used. Twiggie now only has a yeast (fungus) so itreat her ears with only an anitfungal (Conifite) once a week.
 
Not sure if you were around way back when when Mousie had her god awful ear infection and couldn't hardly walk because of it. She got drops too that had a little steroid in it and it didn't effect her BG's at all.

most important though, in my opinion, is diabetes is the least of our concerns. we all know diabetes inside and out, upside down and backwards. When something else happens with our babies, we have to deal with it and work the diabetes around it. you know if the something else gets taken care of, we can always get the diabetes to behave again.
