Well, I did the heated rice sock and it worked, I got blood and Shadow tested at 77 ! He's not on insulin but has been on low carb grain free high protein canned since last Thus. I'll test again tomorrow and see what the reading is. I'm using a relion Confirm and did not do anything to calibrate it with the solution you need to buy from the company so I hope it's ok.

Can this be really happening, a reading of 77 when he got one of 360 at the vet's when he was on dry???

So glad you got blood and what a fantastic number. Yes, removing dry which lowers carb count and with no vet stress involved it can have a dramatic reduction in numbers. See what tomorrow brings but looks like you might have a diet controlled kitty on canned only.

The vet's office visit can stress a cat out and that can raise BG.The change in diet can lower BG quite a bit also. When I switched Nomad from mostly dry to low-carb canned only, his average BG went down about fifty points. Some other members report they have gotten even more drastic results. The stress and diet change could explain the big BG difference.

Hopefully you will get more numbers like this and you won't have to even deal with insulin. :-)

Hi Hope, Michele and Janelle!
It's a bit of a struggle but he's not super scared, more like "hassled" that I am handling him and not letting him jump down from where I'm doing it but he relaxes and leans on me ok. My problem is I have to be patient and let the rice sock warm his ear up long enough and then it's simple! :) At least once I get him in a position to warm his ear, he seems to like the warm sock.

Today I did his bg test at 6:40am b4 he ate and it was 158. The vet said she would want him under 200 so that seems ok. I need to re-read the information on when to test so I'm not doing it too much because I'm too obsessed on getting his readings now. :)

With a new diabetic, we would recommend not shooting under 200, especially with his new lo carb diet and low number yesterday. Non diabetic numbers run anywhere from 40 - 120.

One test you can do is to test, feed and then test again in 20-30 minutes. If his numbers go down after eating, it means that his pancreas is working and that is a very good sign! Other than that, random tests during the day will just give you more data. You want his numbers generally heading down into double digit numbers.

Thanks Sue, that's really helpful. His 4:30a.m. number for bg was 132, I was bummed since yesterday morning at 5:30 is was about 120 (don't have chart in front of me). But I did give him some taste of the wild canned food I had leftover in the freezer to entice him to eat a new can of food and I haven't been able to find the carbs on it so that may have effected him since it was in a few feedings.
