Ragnar is off food AGAIN since I resumed his pills, even with a chaser. I know a lot of people give pills by putting them in the back of the mouth, as I was doing when I didn't know better. Read this!! http://www.catinfo.org/?link=pillingcats

I may have caused Ragnar some serious problems by dry pilling, and want to warn others not to do the same. Even going without his pills isn't going to be good for him...

I am going to try Parmesan cheese, since I have some, but it if he won't take Pill Pockets with that, he will probably have to do without his Azodyl or Denamarin for another period. He was doing better and eating normally until I resumed the pills.

Taking him to the doctor again tomorrow or Friday.

My Abigail is terrible with pills. Miss Kitty on the other hand will eat the pill like it's a treat. I seriously think Miss Kitty will eat anything!
 
Depending on the pill, it is possible to dissolve some meds in an oral syringe (cut tablets up to dissolve faster, empty capsules), add a smidge of stinky food, shake well, and then administer that way.

Also, some meds may be administered subcutaneously like the insulin. Discuss which might be possible to do that way with your vet.
 
BJM's suggestion to dissolve works with many meds but not all. Some don't dissolve well at all. I had a cat with really bad stomatitis so did not want to 'shove' multiple pills down her throat. She needed meds for CHF so I did dissolve the pills, often several different ones together, in a syringe, added water and squirt in her mouth. Much easier on her mouth.

One of the pills that did not dissolve well, I ended up crushing on a piece of paper, folding the paper into a v shape to tip and tap the crushed med into the syringe. Then added water to syringe and put plunger back into syringe. Worked like a charm.
 
Use some Laughing Cow Cheese or just regular cream cheese, worked like a charm for Dottie (GA). I had hard time giving her lasix and enalaphril, she didn't like pill pockets. I thought cream cheese would be good, some one else suggested Laughing Cow Cheese. Both worked with her, she ate her pills right up!

Any pills she has to take gets smothered in laughing cow cheese or low fat cream cheese- not a problem after that :mrgreen:
 
I put Milo's pills in a gelatin capsule and then follow with food, treats or water. That way he never has to taste the pills. Plus you can do all the pills at once. You can get 1000 of them for $15. He also likes how they taste...he is weird.

He got wise to pill pockets and if I try to put the pill in anything, half the time he spits out the pill.
 
Hobbs has to take 1/4 of a blood pressure pill a day. Since I had to buy a pill splitter I bought the pill crusher next to it and just crush it up and sprinkle it on his food. Vet said that was fine if he eats it, which he does, and his BP has gone down so I guess it's working.

I hadn't thought about the dry pilling thing before but that makes sense.

Yes, they get very good at taking the treats and spitting out the pills! I tried putting pills in Pill Pockets and rolling the PPs in Parmesan cheese. Of course, he just licked the cheese off. :lol:

This wouldn't work with Denamarin because it tastes awful!! I tried one, and it's so strong, it practically burns. (I did try crushing it in food before I tasted one, but he foamed at the mouth and eventually spit it all up with a lot of mucus.) If they dissolve in the intestine, not the stomach, pilling and washing it down with water might be OK. After all, R. has been taking one a day since 2009! But if they dissolve in the stomach, that could be giving him a stomach ache.

Can't find out from the manufacturer where they diissolve - I tried. Hope Dr. Jen knows. She wants me to use chewable ones, cutting them up and pilling them, but I am afraid it would be more bulk to swallow...

Thank you for this information! Very helpful! My cat even have breath problems and I will avoid to give him just pills.

I would take butter and let it warm up a bit then roll the pill in the butter. It went down much easier and for a time, Leo would lick the rest of the butter out of a little dish. He got wise to pills inside of anything ... cheese, chicken pill pocket. I like Deb's syringe idea and will try that the next time.
