Working and Increasing Doses

For those of you who work outside of the home, how do you handle increasing doses of insulin when you can't monitor them closely afterward? I'm scared that Taz will go hypo and no one will be home.

I pray.

Honestly, it does worry me, fortunately I am only working part time right now. Can you get a +2 before you leave for work, that is often a predictor of a cycle. And leave enough food out. If I worry about him going low based on the tests I get before I leave even leave higher carb food out.

Do you have a neighbor you can get to check in on your kitty incase you are worried. Also I talked to my boss about it and she was okay with me coming in a bit later if need be.

There is a really good post somewhere around here about working full time and doing TR with Lantus. Maybe the link is on the Lantus dosing page.

Unfortunately I leave right after giving him insulin. I shoot at 8:25 and start work at 8:45. Thankfully I work part time and get home at his +4. I watch him on camera while I'm gone and I can be home within 10 minutes if need be, but we live in a rural area and don't have any close neighbors that I would trust to come over and check on him.

I wasn't sure if I should increase his dosage on the weekend when I can monitor him and take readings as needed, or just jump right in and pray that he'll be ok during those 4 hours. I do have an automatic feeder and he gets low carb treats at +3 and +4.5.

This info post shares some information, although generally meant for people who follow TR, it does offer some things to think about, but testing is key:

Is Tight Regulation Possible with a Full Time Job

On that note, I am probably sounding a bit like a broken record...sorry , but I'd still like to see regular tests before you go to bed. Why? Well again, it helps to see what is happening at night, since at the moment, as I've mentioned before, you are only getting half the picture. The other thing I think might be useful is taking opportunities over the weekend to fill in some of the blanks like +1 and +2 - so you can get a feel for how carb sensitive Taz is, and to get a feel for when he typically onsets and how the insulin is working, when he reaches nadir, how much duration he typically gets. By getting more familiar with how Taz deals with insulin and carbs, when you ARE home and able to test, that can give you more confidence when you leave for work, and aren't able to test.

There were times where I had a lower preshot, and I decided based on what I knew about Maverick to leave some higher carb food for him in his autofeeder, just to be safe.

The other option, is to adjust your insulin shot times, even an hour earlier may allow you to get that out the door test - and if there isn't much of a food bump, you can choose to leave some higher carb food. Just a thought, not sure if that is possible.

There is nothing wrong with waiting to increase, so that you can monitor more closely. That said, SLGS would have you evaluate the dose every 7 days, and run a curve, and you've held for 28 days now, with a few curves in between.
