I did a curve last night on Pepper. She went from 400's down to 144 and surfed for a few hrs. Tonights PMPS was 289, I gave her her full dose of 1.5u and now I'm scared and having a panic attack that I'm going to make her go hypo.

What time zone are you in? I’ll be in and out for about five more hours, so if you already have the injection that should be enough time to know what Pepper has in mind. And there are always folks out in Main Health if no one responds here quickly enough.

I'm not an expert, but will be around for morale support and anything else I can help with :bighug: I think she will be ok as well, she was fine on 1/24 with the same dose with a slightly lower PMPS :cat: and tonight you will be watching to make sure you keep her safe! :bighug::bighug::bighug:

My guess is that she'll be OK. Here's what to do:
  • Test her at +2 because this can give you an idea of the kind of cycle you might have. If the +2 is similar or a bit higher than PMPS it will likely be an uneventful cycle - ie., no scary dives. If it's quite a bit lower, say 50+ points, that can be a sign of action to come (general rule, not carved in stone).
  • If +2 test is 50+ points lower give a small snack of her regular low carb food (1-2 teaspoons). This is to try to control the BG drop so it's gentler and she doesn't get into lime green numbers. Test again about 30 minutes after the snack. Repeat the same type of snack if she's still dropping steeply. This whole process is called "steering with food".
  • If necessary, continue these small snacks and tests every 30 minutes or so until you reach her usual nadir time.
  • Stick to using low carb food for snacks unless a lime green number pops up or she gets very close to 50 on your meter. Then you can try higher carb snacks such as a teaspoon or two of gravy from a high carb wet food.
  • Keep all snacks small so she doesn't get too full too soon in case you have to keep steering with food.
  • Post here for advice.
  • Try to breathe. ;)

Just saw the 250 at +2. That's not a big drop so you don't need to intervene with a snack right now. I suggest you get a +4 to add to your data base.

ETA: Oops! I see you gave her a little LC snack. Not a problem. Try for a +4.

I really do think it will be safe if you need to get some sleep. Prozinc doesn't have a direct connection to the PS number the way that Novolin does. If the kitty is on all low carb food, the dosing is consistent, and the +2 isn't dramatic, then most kitties will flatten along the bottom of the cycle and just surf until the insulin starts to wear off. There are kitties who like the drama, but most of the time you can see that coming in the early numbers. Of course if you're just curious, or want to try to catch a green, then by all means keep going. But if your eyes are heavy, I don't see anything in these numbers that would give me reason to worry.

Yes, Sarah is right: you're doing a great job. It is really scary at first when you just aren't sure what your kitty will do, and how she will respond to different doses and different numbers. You are doing a great job of taking care of her, and a great job of collecting the data that will help you make decisions and feel confident about them as you go forward. I still get nervous shooting on lower-than-normal numbers even after a year of data showing me how my cat responds. It does get easier though. I hope you and Pepper get a good rest with the hours that are left tonight!

Pepper decided to go back down and is surfing again tonight.

I'm still around if you need anything, but she should start coming up again if her past trends hold true. Either way I dont think she'll go into any kind of danger zone tonight :cat:

She is for sure giving me a surprising night. Is it normal for her to keep going down this late after her pm injection?

Its not unheard of. Prozinc usually hits its low point between +5 and +7, but every cat is a little different.... Plus you have to factor in the meter tolerance. You can take 2 back to back tests with your meter and they will most likely be different numbers. I took 3 tests from Mary last week, within a minute of each other, 410, 362, and 312.

Super tired, especially since last night's fun. (Curve). Plus I can hear her snoring and I'm about to test her again. She's gotta be super tired too.

Will be curious to see her AMPS, bet it will be right around 200.... but then again, shes a cat so who knows! Either way you should be good to catch a little sleep :cat:
