Leo has been in the hospital since last night due to projectile vomiting that wouldn't stop. They will be doing an endoscopy tomorrow morning. His BG has been in a range that does not require insulin for the last 6 days. Will his procedure and added stress of being in the hospital possibly cause his BG to increase again? His specialist is very pleased about him not needing insulin so soon after treatment but is cautious because it has not been two weeks yet off insulin.
Will a surgical procedure cause BG to rise?

Some of that will depend on how the procedure goes and how much discomfort it causes afterwards. However some drugs used for anesthetic can also affect glucose levels. Usually when a kitty on insulin is having a procedure such as a dental done it is advised to skip the dose or give a much reduced dose, since there is always a chance of the drugs lowering the glucose levels. Generally these changes in glucose levels are only temporary so hopefully if there should be an increase in glucose it will only be a stress related time period.

Thank you. Currently he is not on insulin because for the past 8 days he has been too low to shoot (normal BG) readings. I was concerned that the stress and the procedure (endoscopy)could push him back up to where he was before. I'm paranoid now about his glucose levels! Maybe even obsessed a little? He's been doing so well with not needing insulin I'd hate to see him regress.

Since even kitties that are on insulin are told to skip a dose or give a very small dose before going under anesthetic that should not affect Leo's glucose levels. There may be some slight increase from stress or discomfort after the procedure, but even if so that should correct itself once he is back home and feeling more comfortable. Even kitties that are in remission have to have procedures done from time to time and usually that does not pull them out of remission the way an infection or the similar would do.
At this point it is more important to find out what is causing the vomiting. Hope all goes well with the endoscopy and the problem is readily fixable.
Thank you. Having a cat with IBD and then also diagnosed with diabetes is nerve wracking and gets complicated. When I took him to the ER Sunday they immediately went in to crises mode hearing he was or is diabetic and started therapy for possible ketoacidosis. I kept trying to tell them his BG had been normal and was normal right before I brought him in. The vomiting was most probably due to his IBD. Oh well, I guess it was good that they were so quick to act in a possible emergency for a diabetic. His BG was elevated a little when they tested him but was much higher than I had gotten at home. The stress does make a pretty big difference in readings.
