Which ketone testing should I believe? Stick or meter?

I finally got a pee sample from Mango where I HAVE BEEN testing him with a ketone blood meter. When I spoke to the vet last week because of the high ketone reading I got from my testing with the meter he said the pee stick is what I should be using. Well I am now starting to believe he may just be right. The pee sample with Nurse Hattie's pee stick gave us a negative. I tested his blood right away and got a 1.5 reading! First thing this morning the ketone reading with the blood meter was .06. Quite a range of reading. My meter is a KetoSens which was the only one available on Amazon. It did not come with a control solution. I like using the blood meter as Mango is an inside/outside cat and doesn't always use the litter pan. I will be calling the company to see if they have a control solution and figure it out from there. I will now be able to relax tonight without worrying Mango is in distress. I get to do the BG curve Wednesday and see where our vet takes the dosage as his BG is high on his AMPS. Been using the AT2 meter for the Vet's sake as it's closest to his blood testing.

From what I have read, blood ketone testing is more accurate. Ketones will show up in the blood before they will show up in urine. So, it is not shocking that you might get a low reading on the blood meter but nothing registers on the urine stick. Just because you get a reading does not mean it is high enough for concern.

Says this: "When do ketones show up on a blood ketone meter such as the Nova Max Plus or Precision Xtra Blood & Ketone meters?
The latest published research/studies in cats indicate ketones will begin to show up at readings of 2.4 and 2.55 on a blood ketone meter"
It also includes this link: " 7/7 Tigger PMPS=452+testing positive for ketones - need help - Thread includes how to read results from a blood ketone meter."

I can't thank you enough for this information on the blood ketone meter. I appreciate this message board more than I can show. Been a stress reliever for me and Mango. :):cat:
