Where to go from here?

I thought Linus' numbers were too high after a week at 1.something, so I upped it to 1.5. Now after 4 days there, his numbers are even higher. No incredible peaks and valleys, just straight pinks and reds, with one 500+ PPMS for good measure. I didn't trust the numbers I got with the Micro that got wet (although, maybe I should have, it's now consistently close to the Contour and usually 20 pts higher). If those numbers are correct, then 1u might have been much better than where I am now. (see spreadsheet 2/11-2/19)

I am going to be home tomorrow to do a better curve. Should I stay the course with 1.5 for that, or go ahead and drop because I can tell that 1.5 isn't right? I can't get any mid-cycle numbers again until the middle of next week (+4 on Wed, +4 and +7 on Thur, maybe more on Fri)

I now have u100 syringes, so can slide down by .2's.

Also, he has been on slightly steroidal ear ointment for infected ears since 2/22. My vet didn't think it would affect his BG much if at all. Any experience?

Any help appreciated - you guys are great!

Good morning, Sue and Linus. ~O)

Quite a few of your BGs were taken within 2 hours of eating so they can't be used as dosing numbers. I'd drop back to 1.2u, gather more non food related numbers and go from there. :-D

A 50% increase from 1 unit to 1.5 units is a pretty big jump. You were getting better numbers on the 1 unit and I see that you tried 1.3u once and got too much duration.

I think 1.2 might be the better increase and hold that dose to let him get used to it.

Hang in there.

I test Linus while he is eating, so that is why food and test times are the same. I put the food on the counter, and then grab an ear as he starts eating. We haven't mastered any way that he will sit still easily for a test without a meal in front of him. If it's not mealtime, I'll grab a few treats and put them in his dish. It's just how it works for us. I don't think most of the numbers are food related.

I went from 1 to an estimated 1.3 (still using u40 syringes) decided I couldn't tell if it was 1.3 or not, I was aiming for something less that 1.5, finally started calling it 1+ and used that amount from 2/18 to 2/21. Bumped it to 1.5, which I felt I could measure better and be more consistent, after the second red PMPS in a row.

Now that I have u100 syringes, I can feel that I'm giving the same amount. I thought going up a little was a good trade for better consistency in amount, but I was definitely wrong, numbers went up, too.

I dropped to 1.2 this morning after another red AMPS. It looks like he may have had some curve action going on yesterday, I can see the trend down and back up even without a test at nadir. I would bet he dropped just into the 200's and came back up to the high 300's or just over 400. Now to get that starting number to drop!

Let's see what happens. :YMPEACE:

I remember you had to explain your feeding schedule to me too. Maybe if you put it somewhere on your spreadsheet, people will look there before asking. But probably not  They'll just ask......

I did start putting food type and amount on the spreadsheet, so that's probably where the confusion starts. I was trying to get an idea of how much he was getting and when and if certain types had any dramatic effect on BG.

Speaking of food, he's getting about 12oz of food divided into about 4 feedings. He was 13.3 lb when first diagnosed, and has gained .5 lb since then. He is looking really good now.

Oh, good. :-D Often we are so focused on the bg levels, we forget to look at the whole kitty and see that he looks and acts better! I think your vet made that mistake.

Bump

+4 number is higher than AMPS or +2 today. I always get weird or flat numbers when I try to get a curve, it never fails.
