Yesterday, Hannah had a wonderful day... pretty good numbers, at least for her. Last night's PMPS was less than usual at 271, so gave her a smaller dose, hoping not to drop her too low overnight when I wouldn't be monitoring. This morning she had a horrible number, so gave the usual 1.2 U, expecting the numbers to drop throughout the day, as they usually do. That didn't happen. Instead, her numbers have been rising steadily and we've got hours to go before her next dose of insulin. She's never done this before and I'm pretty worried, here. :nailbiting: There's no evidence of a fur shot, so I've ruled that out. Does anyone have any ideas about what might be going on? Other than the bad, crazy numbers, she's acting pretty normal.
 
Have we explained bouncing? Bouncing happens when the glucose drops quickly and/or drops to a very unfamiliar level. The body produces compensatory hormones which release stored glucose (glycogen) and send the glucose right back up and then some, often for as many as 3 days.
There are limited ways to control bouncing - steering the glucose numbers with food of various carb levels, using a hair less insulin so the body becomes more accustomed to lower numbers gradually rather than aiming for as low as possible right away. Other than that, you just have to wait it out.
 
Thanks for responding, BJ! It was a long day for Hannah and I was starting to think ProZinc land had turned into a ghost town. Yep, I'm pretty much familiar with the bouncing thing. It's just that she's never bounced like that, before. Her numbers always come down... but not this time around. Guess this is the reward we get for listening to our vet's assistant who sternly told me the high pre-shot numbers were caused by Hannah's dose being too low and that an increase was in order. For cryin' out loud, the woman is an RN. Wouldn't you think she'd have a clue about this?!

Actually, with ProZinc, high preshot numbers could be a duration issue. You might check this by getting tests in the +9 to +11 time frame when possble. Even just getting +11 will show if it is wearing off too soon.
 
Hi Carole, I don't have any advice. I just saw your notes and wanted to let you know my mind is mush, too! I understand your frustration. I actually threw my meter halfway across my kitchen last night. lol! So, repeat after me: AAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Feel better? Me either... (((HUGS))) Looks like you're getting somewhat better numbers now at least. Come on Hannah! Red and black is just not your colors!

Oh, Stacy... isn't mushy mind just the most wonderful experience?... NOT! This is, at times, so very frustrating and I am still, after all this time, having quite a time trying to wrap my head around it all. What almost, almost makes sense one day goes right down the tubes the next day. Bouncing, dose too small, dose too big, kitty doesn't feel well... who the heck knows?! No disrespect intended, but I almost have to snicker when folks say, "Look for a pattern in the numbers." I've never actually thrown Hannah's meter, but I've slammed a few things around in frustration, just to vent a bit. My DH just stands back and waits for the smoke to clear. I checked out Bud's Spreadsheet and I guess yesterday's black PMPS number must have been the reason for the meter going airborne. (((Hugs))) and best wishes to you and Bud, as well.

I know what you mean, there is absolutely no pattern in Buds numbers except that there is no pattern... Lol. I suppose last night could have been new dose wonkiness since he did get an increase Saturday night.

My husband tries to be helpful. He asked how I felt taking Bud off insulin for a bit to see what his numbers do. And honestly, I had thought of that myself, but now that we are on a depot insulin, it's not something I want to try now. Hopefully this PMPS is the start of a good pattern! ;)

Well not a good number this AMPS but I didn't even think about tossing the meter. I realize it's probably a bounce, and that's what Bud does best... I see we got about the same number this morning... Maybe Hannah and Bud are talking to each other behind our backs. ;)
