Good morning ! Elmo continues to improve due so much to the love , knowledge and 24/7 help of this Board. Lately after he has eaten his full feed for the morning he is back in wanting more to eat. Don't want to interfere with BGs lowering by feeding a small low carb snack AND he is starting to gain weight, which is great but dont want that to get out of hand either. I tend to stay away from dry food cos of his kidneys but could use it in small amount in between AM and PM feeding. He is also hyperthyroid. Ideas for how to satisfy Elmo's munchies???

Hi Beth,

Try feeding him a little extra of his regular low-carb wet food when he looks for it, Beth. You're able to track his BG so you'll see the effects.

The 'appetite uptick' you're seeing is most likely the main onset of the insulin dose. It's a good idea to keep a little note in your spreadsheet of the + time when this occurs.

It's also an early warning to check Elmo's BG. I see he dipped into double digits the other day. That plus his other recent data indicate that he nadirs quite early in the cycle. Watching for that appetite 'uptick' is a good signal to keep a closer eye on him (test before you give him his snack).

The Buddha Kitteh is doing well! (Anti-jinx!!) :cat:

Beth, have you increased Elmo up the full dose increase of thyroid meds yet? Just wondering if part of what you are seeing is the thyroid "talking" too and he really does need a tad more of his med. Pure speculation and food for thought! :)

Linda, that is a good thot. The thyroid levels the new vet saw were when Elmo was on just 1/2 0f a 2.5 mg thy Rx( before i had increased to 3/4). I have kept dose at 3/4 of a pill and my thinking was to keep it at that for another week or so then go get thy levels tested to see where we r at. Vet said he definitely believed Elmo"s high numbers after vet visit 12/19 was stress related and not thyroid med related. He has never shown typical hyperthyroid symptoms in the 3 years since diagnosis..it just showed up in routine blood tests and for longest time he operated in hyperthyroid number range with hyPOthyroid symptoms( which former vet told me was impossible but there stood Mr Elmo doing it:rolleyes:). But now with the diabetes/hyperthyroid combo going on it pays to consider all options. Thank you for the food for thought. I will be watching him closer today as he is up exploring instead of man caving:smuggrin:

For future reference, the post-dose appetite uptick on Caninsulin/Vetsulin can become really pronounced when numbers start heading downwards fairly quickly, especially when cat is running in a good range generally. Also, as the pancreas heals the uptick may come sooner and sooner in the cycle. (I saw strong dose onsets in Saoirse at less than +45 minutes on some occasions.)

My eyes fill with tears of gratitude, dear Mogs, that you and sweet Saoirse walked such a similar road as Elmo and I walk now and we are benefiting from that journey. It , in my humble opinion, is far too similar to be coincidental....providential , I'd say :bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug:

If you are open to dry food, Young Again Zero carb has never raised my cats bg. I let her free feed on it whenever she wants.
They will send a free sample if you ask.

Hi Janet !! Thot about you and Young Again. It might be an option for a treat, given a few pieces at a time. Thanks for the reminder:). Also, wanted to thank you for all the early on help and guidance you have given to Elmo and I ...I know it has played a part in his continuing improvement.:bighug::bighug::bighug:
