What to Do with a Fur Shot?

Hi All,

This morning, my cat Lewis' AMPS was 226, lowest pre-shot number ever! I was so excited that I did not do a good job on the injection...I checked his fur after the shot, and I could feel it was a little bit wet...so I was pretty sure that's a fur shot. I remembered reading some posts saying that do NOT give another shot if you got a fur shot, so I left it as is and went to work.

This evening, his PMPS went up to 300, highest pre-shot number ever...

So here's my question: what are you supposed to do if you are pretty sure you gave a fur shot? I know giving another shot might be dangerous. But leaving it as is will let the BG go up....ah, what a dilemma!

Thanks a lot.

Wendy

One day at higher numbers is less dangerous than a minute at dangerously low numbers. All of us have done a fur shot. It happens. But since you can't be certain how much of the insulin got in, you just can't add any insulin on top of that.

I looked at your spreadsheet and it's looking good. You do need to get some mid cycle numbers to see how low the insulin is taking him. 4-6 hours checks are great.

You did exactly what you were suppose to do with a fur shot, nothing, since you can never be sure how much did or didn't give the kitty. Yeah your next preshot numbers maybe a little higher, but remember better a day too high, than a minute too low.

And remember, fur shots happen even to the best of us, cut yourself some slack and just go with the next shot at the next shot time.

Thank you Sue! Yea, point taken. Even though I was sure that's a fur shot, he might still got some insulin in...

As for the mid cycle numbers, I do plan to get some more data points over this weekend. My vet, surprisingly a big supporter of hometesting, kept encouraging me to get more tests done throughout the day. How often am I supposed to take the mid cycle numbers, btw?

Good to know I'm not the only one. Thank you!!!

it is great to get a number around 6 hours after the shot as often as possible. The more the data the better. When you can, do a curve. You take a test every 2 hours during a day to see when the insulin starts taking him down, how low it takes him and then how soon he starts back up.

Gotcha. Will give a try!

Amy!

Yes I did. Thank you so much! Actually I called you yesterday, but you did not pick up. I just wanted to give you some updates on Lewis. Again, thank you for your warm support. I'll try to call you later. :)
