My 12 year old diabetic cat has been switched to Fancy Feast canned a few weeks ago. My new vet, a cat specialist had me go from the 6 units of Prozink my other vet prescribed to 2 units twice a day. Sugars have been in low to mid 200's. Vet has me back the 24th to check and adjust. I have had 377 and 325 my last tests at home. He might have eaten a couple of bites of dry on the 377, but not too much. I test once a week. I couldn't get enough blood to test today. My cat is a grazer. I leave canned food during the day when I work and feed when I am home at night.It would be better to have 3 feedings a day. I worry about him not having food while I am gone. He is hungry usually at 4:30 when I get home. I leave at 6:30. Question...if he has eaten off and on during the day and eats more at 4:30, how long should I wait to test? He gets his shots at 6:00 morning and evening. Vet is gone for a week. I can see her partner, but really trust her. Cat acts fine. Could the tests be high because he ate only 1 1/2 hours before testing? I don't want to ignore it and have kidney problems, I don't want to up insulin if I don't have to, I don't want to rush to the vets if it can wait till my vet is back. Any ideas/suggestions?

Testing 1 1/2 hour after eating would likely include the increase in BG due to eating. However, I can't really tell since you did not indicate when feed.
To determine does yo have to, on a typical day like eating the same as normal. take a BG before shot and and before eating, and then about every two hours until the next shot.

One of best times to get a test is 5-7 hours after the shot, which is usually the lowest point with ProZinc. That will tell you whether the cycle is generally high and flat and that he might need more insulin or if he drops low midcycle and bounces back up for the preshot number.

Testing once a week will not tell you much of anything about how the insulin is working or whether it is safe to give the amount you are planning on giving. Check Peg and Toby's thread on this page. She has been giving 5 units twice a day. Suddenly this morning he was 91. If she had not tested and just given the usual dose, he probably would be in the ER this morning. Our thought is that we wouldn't give our child insulin without checking their levels; we do the same for our 4 legged children. It is very important that you test before each shot and midcycle to see how the insulin is working and adjust accordingly. It is especially important if you have recently changed to wet low carb. When we changed from dry to wet, our Oliver dropped 100 points between his evening shot and his morning test. If we had given the usual amount (which was a high amount as we were feeding dry and it keeps the numbers high) he would probably have hypoed.

Thank you. He has been adjusted from 6 to 2 units due to change of food. He just nibbles all the time when I am at work. I thought about a timed feeder but might not stay cold enough for 10 hours.Sometimes between 10 pm. and 5:30 am. He meows he is hungry. It would be nice to be home and feed at 3 set times. Then I would know how to test. I appreciate your link. Thank you again.

I freeze my wet food. Six cans of Fancy Feast fit perfectly in a cupcake pan. I use a silicone one so I can pop out the frozen pucks and store them in a bag in the freezer. I use mine at night. We put a frozen puck in the automatic feeder at night and it feeds him at 5:45am. By then it has thawed.
