What should I do in this storm?

My heart is aching over this, I do not want to evacuate. I just can't abandon Jessie and her brother. I live in a mobile home, and just learned that I will be the only one on my street who is staying. As you know, Jessie is not going anywhere near a crate.I brought it in the house, and they have both run from it. My neighbor suggested putting them in one room with their litter pans, food and water, and they will hide. But what about food if I can't get back to my house? What about Jessie's insulin and getting tested and shots? How can I leave them behind? But my son is pleading with me to get out.

A pillow case. Try taking one, and scrunch it up enough and then go to Jessie, better if she is on a bed or chair, quickly put it right over her and then pull the ends underneath her and grab her in the case. Then put the carrier vertical, door opening at top, drop the case in and shut door. They work their way out of the case.

Where are you located? I am in Eastern North Carolina and we are mid way the storm now. There are some trees down and some flooding in coastal areas....but, no damage to mobile homes that I have heard of...it could have been a lot worse here.

We have been through many hurricanes---this one is no fun, but it is not as bad as advertised.

I am in DE. Mostly concerned with the wind, as I don't know how securely this singlewide is tied down. Most of the bad weather will be in darkness, and if the creek rises or a tree comes down, there will be no way to get out. I have been invited to a friend's house, but no kitty invite. I understand that. Just cut up some chicken for Jessie, and fed her brother. Am skipping insulin, as her numbers have made no sense recently, and have wanted to post about that. Did I mention that she has been very cooperative about testing? Am so proud of her!

I live no where near you, but I understand your not wanting to abandon Jessie and her brother; I wouldn't want to either. The pillow case trick is a great idea, I hope you give it a try. If that works for you and you can evacuate, great; but if the storm is already upon you it might be better to stay put now. My prayers are with you and your family (including your fur-babies)! Hope you stay safe!!

I third the pillowcase idea, unless the storm is already there, in which case I agree with the staying put!
Also, I have better luck getting mine in the carrier butt end first. I put them in a bathroom with no where to hide, then bring in the carrier.
Did your friend specifically say no cats or did she maybe not realize to extend the invite to cats also?
I had to evacuate this summer with 2 dogs and 2 cats because of a wildfire. It can be very stressful but you'll feel better if you are all safe and together!

Good Luck

My friend specifically stated the invitation was for me only. I can understand that. Both Jessie and Church are sleeping peacefully through the downpour, as though they trust that mom would take care of them. The wind has not started here yet.
I have only tested Jessie once today, and given no shot. She is consistently in the upper 200- low 300 range with no insulin. When I give her a shot, her numbers go up instead of down, to the mid 300. Can't make any sense of it. It is quite funny to see how willingly she jumps on the counter and lays down to get her ear poked. We are done in 10 seconds! My feisty girl has done quite a turnaround. You all told me it gets easier, I just didn't think it would happen.
Remember my post "I don't think I can do this anymore"? Was that really me? Just goes to show to the newbies that it gets better.

If her numbers go up instead of down when you give her insulin, that could be a sign of too much insulin and it is sending her into rebound, try reducing her dose. What dose is she on right now, if you were giving her insulin and which insulin? Right now Musette is bound and determined to teach me the "less is more" principle...lol. But any numbers above 250 or the renal threshhold you are running the risk of ketones so you want to be testing for those at home as well.

But right now just be safe and keep Jesse and Church safe as well.

We are all ok. Felt calmer after speaking with Venita last night. Didn't like the idea of weathering a storm like that in a mobile home in the dark, when you don't know how secure the home is. And the weather channel keeps posting that alert on the bottom of the screen saying that mobile homes would suffer damage to roof, walls, and windows if they were secured well, and would be destroyed if they weren't. If we got the high winds they were reporting, it would have been different, but we got lucky, I guess. Kitties didn't like all the noise, and no one got much sleep.
I appreciate everyone's concern and suggestions. So glad I found this place.
