hi everyone,
i posted the following post a little bit ago. someone responded telling me to check my own sugar stating it should be under 100. so i did and i was 90. i checked simba again and the meter still read 'hi'. this was approx 45 min after i gave him his injection. what do i do? do i need to go to the emergency room? he is acting ok but i've never had it read 'hi' before. below is my original post:

Hi everyone,
i have been using the Relion meter for a couple wks now. let me give you a quick background on what has been going on first real quick

simba has been sick the past wk. we went to the vet, gave him meds and he adjusted his insulin. we were doing 1 unit 2x a day. but since he has been sick and not eating well he said to do 1.5 units and once he was back to normal go up to 2 units. so i did. i gave him 2 units this morning. i give him shots at 7am and 7p. the vet wanted me to do midday readings due to the increase. so i did. this morning he was 270...which is the lowest he has been. the day prior he was 503 and then that night he was 367. that was just on the 1 unit.

anyway here is my concern. when i checked him this morning he was 270. i then ran out of strips, so i went to walmart got new ones. i just tested him a few min ago and the meter read 'hi'. i did another strip same thing.
the highest he has been is 503 and this 'hi' thing has me worried. do i need to be concerned and take him to the emergency room? or try again in a bit? and how long do i wait and/or how often should i keep testing him?

this has never happened and wasn't sure if this was normal b/c it was new strips or if there is truly an issue here. thanks
michelle and simba

Michelle,
My Frodo will occasionally bounce after a low reading (say 100) to a "hi" reading. With the Relion meter "hi" means greater than 600. It can't measure anything higher than this accurately, so it doesn't. "Hi" isn't life threatening like a really low number. I was alarmed the first time also!!! But you don't need a trip to the emergency room. Take a deep breath. He's okay. Hopefully it will be back down into a more normal range tomorrow. If not, post again and some of the more experienced people on this board will help you think things through.
Good luck,
Heidi

One thing is with high numbers is to check for ketones.
Also, what kind is diet are you giving? The test you are running what are they in relation to food?

Michelle,
I forgot to add that in case you're not familiar with a bounce, it happens when a kitties BG drops lower than his body is used to. It doesn't mean it dropped too low (hypo), just low enough that the cat's body freaked a little and over produced glucose in the liver to bring the blood sugar back up. It can take awhile for your kitty to get used to a new range (such as the 200's for SImba). If you look at Frodo's SS you'll see he bounced today although not as much as your kitty. I got a little freaked out last month by a string of hypos, so we went without insulin for awhile, then started back slowly at microdoses. Today he dropped into the 200 range for the first time in 3 weeks and his body didn't like it. He bounced into the 460 range a few hours later. That's not normal for my kitty. That's a mild bounce. Simba seems to have had a stronger bounce but it's still most likely a bounce. Hopefully someone with more experience can give you a little more guidance soon, but don't stay up all night worrying about him. I would test again before going to bed, but you don't have to keep testing until it goes down.

Definitely keep checking for Ketones- that can be deadly. I haven't used a Relion meter but all the meters I've used require you to input a code that matches the new batch of strips each time you open a new batch- read your meter's instructions carefully. If you are using a wrong code it could throw your results.

thanks everyone!

when i checked at 11pm last night he was down to 544. this morning at 7am he was 323.
but b/t last night and this morning he had barely eaten.
so we'll see how the day goes.

thanks again for all your help and support

Lantus dose adjustments are based on the lowest glucose level of the day, typically 6 hours after the insulin shot, give or take an hour.

Can you pick a day and do a curve? Basically test him every 2 hours beginning with the pre-shot and going to the next pre-shot? I suspect it will show he is ready for a dose increase if you do. (Of course, so does the presence of ketones.)
