It seems like I am getting my Lucky Cat's BG levels under control. But my question is, What is the ultimate goal? To keep the level under 200? Under 100?
My cat will go without insulin for 1 day and then I need to dose him and I am wondering if that is ok? His dosage has been going between .25 and .50 on Prozinc (.50 when he finds a couple of pieces of hard food ) but usually only 1x per day. I would really like to get him regulated so I am giving the same dose AM/PM if possible. Please look at my spreadsheet and tell me if there is something else I should be doing. Are there doses smaller than .25? If so, what are the syringes that I buy?

ALso -- I am leaving for a week long vacation and my neighbor is taking care of my Lucky cat. She is ok with giving him insulin but she won't be home testing. So, I really need to get a somewhat consistent schedule/dosage for her while I am gone.

Thanks - Julie

A cat is considered OTJ if bgs stay consistently under 150 for 2 week without insulin.

Are you using half unit marked U100 insulin syringes for the ProZinc? There are no smaller insulin syringes you can buy. According to the conversion chart, you can dose as small as 0.2 units of U40 insulin with a U100 insulin syringe: http://www.felinediabetes.com/insulin-conversions.htm I guess if you measure less than the 0.5 unit line on the U100 insulin syringe you could dose as small as 0.1 units of U40 insulin.

I have always thought our OTJ test was 2 weeks under 120 with the majority of the time in double digits. Lucky is close! You are doing fine, giving small doses when he climbs a little higher. You can also mini dose. Be sure, in either case, that his rising. It would also be helpful to have those +6 numbers to see what his nadir numbers are. (that helps you see that he is sure rising)

When mini dosing, most people pick a number between 150-180. They shoot when the cat reaches that number, as long as the number is definitely rising. And they shoot a mini dose - in the .1 to .25 range - so they are using the U100 needles and the conversion chart. With this method, you don't have to skip shots; you catch him when he starts up, often off the 12/12 schedule. It is difficult if you can't be around to monitor and chase the numbers, but it usually doesn't last too long. If you want help, you could post over on the PZI forum.

I just got a reading of 100 at almost 8hours +... I guess I need to make the switch over to U-100 syringes to start with. I bought a bulk of U-40's on Amazon- so, I had been eyeballing the insulin dosage.
Where do you get the U-100 syringes? AMazon had some but they looked expensive and I think they are for humans- are they universal for pets and humans? The u-40's said they were for pets.

Also - can I Just donate my unopened U-40's back to someone on this site that needs them or to the organization?

Thanks! Julie

Mnay of us buy needles fro ADW, you can link to them from the shop button on top of the page. (FDMB gets a commission and it doesn't cost you anything!) We get the "Monoject Ultra Comfort U-100 Insulin Syringes 31G 5/16" 100/bx" Just under $16 a box. You can save a little more by getting the 3 box pack. Like all syringes the are a little inaccurate for micro doses, but they are better than moat. You can also buy the same size at Walmart in their Relion brand. Be sure to get the ones w/ half unit markings

Sorry! It is 2 weeks to be OTJ, not 1 week ohmygod_smile I edited my post to correct the info.

I buy my U100s at Walmart. They are in a white box w/ purple writing and have the 1/2 unit marks. You can buy them by the 10 pack (to see if you like them) or by the box of 100. I think they're around $12/100 or $1.80/10.
