What insulin to use?

Hi all. I have not been here for a long time. Squamee was on PZI over a year ago after she developed diabetes after a heavy steroid injection. She did well on PZI and went OTJ last August. Now she again has the jaw (?) problem---never really diagnosed---for which she was originally given the steroids, and since she is having great difficulty eating, my vet is planning to start steroids on MOnday. I want to be prepared---I think it likely she will develop diabetes again, and I want to know which insulin to ask for. Are you using ProZinc? I am assuming PZI is not available. Any info about what you use and if you know if it is similar to PZI would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! Judy

Hi, welcome back,

We use Prozinc but I think that there are other forms of PZI still around.

The Prozinc seems to be working for us now. There is a 45 day settling in period where they get some wonky #'s and the nadir moves around some. But is more flexible schedule wise for me than Lantus so I worked with it.

Many use either BCP PZI or ProZinc. May I ask what the symptoms are of the jaw problem other than not eating? I am curious if your vet thinks it is stomatitis maybe.....

Hi Judy, Its nice to hear from you, but I'm sorry you think you might have to have insulin again for Squamee. Maybe you should post Squamee's symptoms on the Health Board and see what others think? I would hate to see her have to go back on the juice. I hope everything is going well with you and your family. We are still around, but we switched to Lantus in March. Blackie is doing well - he's 17 now, but his CRF has gotten worse so he's on subQ fluids. I hope you find the answers you need.

Thanks for your responses. What is stomatitis? The symptoms are trying to eat and then moving her jaw in funny ways (and sometimes a clicking sound) and sort of looking like she is trying to get peanut butter off the roof of her mouth, and then rubbing the sides of her face with her paws. This is even with watery food and also just with water---so it doesn't seem related to chewing.
The vet gave her qave her a steroid injection yesterday and she is acting as she did when diabetic, so I just checked her BG and it was 271. UGH! I will call the vet tomorrow about insulin and I guess I will ask for ProZinc.

Hi Ele,
Glad to hear from you! 17 years is more than Squamee---she is 16. I was afraid for awhile that I might be dealing with renal issues, and the subQ fluids intimidate me. Do you find it very difficult? Does Blackie cooperate? Are things going better on Lantus than they did on PZI?
My family are all well. Thanks for asking. I can't believe the twins are almost 7 months!
