I have switched Cedric to high protein low carb food, using Blue Buffalo Wilderness and Wellness brand canned food. What are your recomendations?

The general recommendation is to feed whatever low carb brand that your cat likes to eat and you can find in the local stores and can afford.

Wellness is a good brand that many peope here feed. A plus is that it comes in large 12 ounce (I think) cans which is economical if you have a multi-cat household.

Fancy Feast and Friskies are two brands available almost everywhere and doesn't cost a lot. There are many low carb varieties of these.

I fed my diabetic higher end foods because that was all he would eat  Mostly EVO and Nature's Variety Instinct with a few other brands thrown in for variety (Weruva, Go! Natural, two of the seafood ProPlan canned, SOrganics).

Hi doombuggy, and, of course, you too, sweet Cedric,

I feed Nikki Fancy Feast, mostly classic, yet the occasional Chunky turkey, chicken, or chopped grilll. Okay, also the occasional flaked trout or tuna feast...

How are you?

Love and our continued encouraging hugs,
Deb and Nikki -- and, Giz, who taught me so much she actually reminded me to eat...

Thanks for the imput. Funny, I started feeding Cedric a can of Fancy Feast each day about 3 years ago, along with his blue buffalo weight control, and now I am in this boat. :? He young, only slightly overweight (why isn't my dad's 20 ld older cat FD?) and now has this issue. I guess I am just smarting at the $541 bill I got at the vet's last week, since that's where he had to be boarded while I was in Denver/Boulder. He had his teeth cleaned too, something I usually do each year anyway.

The Wilderness canned (3 oz) is $1.39 each. The Wellness is $1.19 each. The vet recomended that he get 2 cans per day, since he gets very little dry (1/8 of a cup to keep him in case he gets hungary while I am at work). That is Wilderness Chicken flavor. I think the 6 oz per day is too much, as he leaves both type of food in the bowl, and to be honest, it's too expensive to keep tossing in the trash (even if it's only about 1/4 of the can). I expect the vet to call tomorrow to talk about his BG curve on Friday, so I am going to suggest that I try giving him a little less (5.5oz or whatever the next can size is).

He seems fine, and had a nice time while he was "away." He spent 5 days at the vet, but I gave them his "love glove" brush and he started liking them when his coat got brushed. Last Monday I took him over to Best Friends (they have a pet spa at our resort now: http://wdw.bestfriendspetcare.com/ ) where I would be able to go twice a day to give him his insulin. I had to take his BG that first night, and thnak goodness my friend Bambi was there to assist, as I had nothing to heat his ear with. On Tuesday he got to meet my good friends who were down and had me stay with them at Animal Kingdom Lodge. She is having nurological disorders and possibly has ovarian cancer. Rita & Doug have 4 cats of their own, and Rita really perked up when she played w/cedric. (She had the love glove, of course). We are now back to our same dull routine, although he did have a 1/2 at work with me on Friday.

I have come to terms that this will take some time to change, and that it is not killing him. His numbers are better and I am hoping we can get him better regulated. Tomorrow I plan on going back to Pet Smart (and the Pet Supermarket if needed) to check out some other grain free, high protien and low carb canned food for him.

If Cedric could he would send some of his special hugs to you all (paw on each shoulder, or gripping your neck, and lick your neck like crazy). thanks for helping!

with Fancy Feast - avoid the "with Gravy" flavors - they are all high carb.

of FF flavors, we use Chopped Grill and Chicken Feast the most (fish allergy in one of my cats)

We mainly feed Merricks BG 96% (Before Grain) chicken, turkey and quail/chicken flavors.

A nice feature of the other Merricks line -- they have a LOW GLYCEMIC badge on the label of the low carb flavors like Cowboy Cookout

The lowest carb dry food is EVO at 8% carbs. But of course we recommend NO dry food.

My cat's off the juice since last October. He eats a rotation of Friskies - MIxed Grill pate, Poultry platter pate, and turkey and giblets pate. I swear that getting him off the dry food reversed his need for insulin.

Hi doombuggy, and, of course, you too, sweet Cedric,

How can you not love a cat named Cedric who thinks he's a dog? I mean, really...

I'm glad you're coming to terms, dear doombuggy. Diabetes is very do-able. But, it does require patience...

Then again, there's nothing like dancing with a sugar cat!

You've come a long way, Grasshopper... I'm proud of you. Better yet, Cedric is proud of you...

Much love and our continuing encouraging hugs for you both,
Deb and Nikki -- and, Giz, forever dancing in my heart...

If you're feeding Wellness, try to buy the 12.5 ounce cans (the grainfree varieties come in that size - Beef and Chicken, Chicken, etc.). At PetCo (I haven't see the 12.5 oz cans at PetSmart), the cost is $2.55 per can, plus you can sign up for the rewards program and get $5 certificates as you spend money. Also sign up at the Wellness website, and they'll send you coupons every month. The coupons aren't always for canned food, but when they are you can print them off as many times as you want.

I recently discovered that EVO canned is only $1.75 for the 13.5 oz cans at the local independent pet food store, so I'm transitioning Bandit over to the 95% varieties from Fancy Feast Classic. You're in Orlando, right? If you go to their web site and enter your zip code, then can tell you the closest store that stocks it. http://wtb.naturapet.com/ Most stores that stock EVO also stock Wellness and Merrick's, and the Wellness at the independent store is cheaper than at PetSmart and PetCo.

we actually transitioned recently to EVO 95% chicken and turkey, and although i thought that it would be way more expensive than the FF we were feeding its actually saving money because they don't eat as much, both their coats are silky (one civvie and one sugarcat) and actually from being on a less quality food and patches starting to go up in Bg's and losing a bit of weight after 3 weeks he gained it back.....i wish i would have switched much earlier, but you learn as you go!
i called around to a few places and was able to get a discount for purchasing a case at a time

I did buy some EVO at Pet Supermarket yesterday and Cedric seems to like it. I bought some more Wellness also. We had an episode yesterday, as I took his Bg and it was 64. The lowest it's been is 154, so I didn't give him insulin and called the vet. I went home for lunch (fortunately, work is 3 miles away) and it was in the 200 range, so I think I had a bad reading. Last week he was in the 100s range, but now he's back to 200s range. I am testing him 2x per day, and the dr wants to double ck the results later this week (b/c of yesterday) before in creasing his dosage .5u.
