Thanks for the imput. Funny, I started feeding Cedric a can of Fancy Feast each day about 3 years ago, along with his blue buffalo weight control, and now I am in this boat. :? He young, only slightly overweight (why isn't my dad's 20 ld older cat FD?) and now has this issue. I guess I am just smarting at the $541 bill I got at the vet's last week, since that's where he had to be boarded while I was in Denver/Boulder. He had his teeth cleaned too, something I usually do each year anyway.
The Wilderness canned (3 oz) is $1.39 each. The Wellness is $1.19 each. The vet recomended that he get 2 cans per day, since he gets very little dry (1/8 of a cup to keep him in case he gets hungary while I am at work). That is Wilderness Chicken flavor. I think the 6 oz per day is too much, as he leaves both type of food in the bowl, and to be honest, it's too expensive to keep tossing in the trash (even if it's only about 1/4 of the can). I expect the vet to call tomorrow to talk about his BG curve on Friday, so I am going to suggest that I try giving him a little less (5.5oz or whatever the next can size is).
He seems fine, and had a nice time while he was "away." He spent 5 days at the vet, but I gave them his "love glove" brush and he started liking them when his coat got brushed. Last Monday I took him over to Best Friends (they have a pet spa at our resort now:
http://wdw.bestfriendspetcare.com/ ) where I would be able to go twice a day to give him his insulin. I had to take his BG that first night, and thnak goodness my friend Bambi was there to assist, as I had nothing to heat his ear with. On Tuesday he got to meet my good friends who were down and had me stay with them at Animal Kingdom Lodge. She is having nurological disorders and possibly has ovarian cancer. Rita & Doug have 4 cats of their own, and Rita really perked up when she played w/cedric. (She had the love glove, of course). We are now back to our same dull routine, although he did have a 1/2 at work with me on Friday.
I have come to terms that this will take some time to change, and that it is not killing him. His numbers are better and I am hoping we can get him better regulated. Tomorrow I plan on going back to Pet Smart (and the Pet Supermarket if needed) to check out some other grain free, high protien and low carb canned food for him.
If Cedric could he would send some of his special hugs to you all (paw on each shoulder, or gripping your neck, and lick your neck like crazy). thanks for helping!
