What do you do about vacations?

My husband's boss is paying to take the company to Vegas for 3 days in October and I've been invited to come along. We've been so excited to go because we never take vacations. Now Missy has been diagnosed and I'm not sure if I can go. I don't really have anyone nearby who could watch her, as well as know what to do when it comes to testing and injecting. My brother and his girlfriend live nearby, but they would probably just want to come by, do what they have to do, and then leave. I really don't want Missy by herself for a long period of time, especially when she's not fully regulated. Maybe if her numbers were a little more stable, I'd feel more comfortable. But when I have to adjust the dose for every shot... I don't want to put anymore stress on my brother than he already has. I would love to go on the trip, but I would be devastated if something happened to Missy while we were gone. Vegas will be there for awhile, but I only have one Missy.

So, what do y'all do? Do you still take vacations? Or are you like me and always stay within a 50 mild radius because of the sugarcat/furbaby at home?
 
That's a great question. I'll be waiting to see what the answers are to this myself. Before dx we would go to CT where our families live, but this year (he was dx in Feb) I don't think we're going to make the trip. Our neighbor used to watch and feed him for us, but I can't ask her to test and give shots every 12 hours. She works crazy hours and wouldn't be able to stick with that schedule. Klinger has a bad rep at the vet (evil kitty at the vet - (not my angel :lol: ))so boarding him is out too. Good luck! I hope you get to go on vacation.
 
Yeah, it's kind of a bummer. We never go on vacations because we're always working. This opportunity came up and we jumped on it. Then, one month later, Missy was diagnosed. I would love to go to Vegas since I've never been, but not if it jeopardizes her health and the progress we've made. I don't want to board her because she stresses very easily. I just emailed a pet sitter who says she knows how to check the glucose and give insulin injections. We'll see what happens.
 
You have already covered most the usual suggestions, vet tech, family (I'd at least ask), pet sitter, boarding, at least she's already diabetic, the trick is to find someone who will be willing to test and shoot according to your instructions.

Harley had been diet controlled for almost one year when I had to go out of town for work and my pet sitter cancelled at the last minute and I had to board him at the vet clinic and they gave him back to me diabetic again.
 
p.s. I'd try dropping your dose down to 0.2. You are getting a downward slope rather than a U-curve, which could be a sign the dose is too high. Since the last time you shot 0.2 you got a nice green nadir, I'm thinking maybe the 0.3 is a hair too much? It might also give you a shootable PM #, so help keep more insulin in her system overnight and avoid a high AMPS.
 
Yeah, I was thinking about that. The only reason I went with 0.3 this morning was because she was at 400. We'll try the 0.2 tomorrow and see what happens. It's hard to believe 0.3 is too much
