What cat food should I use??

I have switched to Special Kitty (Walmart brand) wet cat food for my cat. My mom is freaking out because she says it has almost no nutritional value. I am strapped for cash, so I"m looking for something inexpensive but still good for my kitty. Any suggestions?
 
Special Kitty is fine for cats, I have 12 of them that are doing lovely on it, my civies are healthy and sleek, Maxwell is still in remission and Musette is gaining weight and getting silky as her coat comes back in. Special Kitty is also grain free. The other low end foods cost wise is going to be Friskies (which has grain) or 9-lives (grain free), then slghtly up from those would be Fancy Feast, which has a pretty high liver content, and only 2 of mine liked it. Then on the higher priced and a littlebetter quality would be Evo, Wellness etc. Which even it I wanted to I couldn't feed here unless I ordered it on line as the nearest Petsmart or Petco is 250 miles away. The better brands seem to be only sold in those type places or specialty pet stores which there are none of around me at least. And personally, with 12 cats, I'm not spending $1+ a can for catfood, but that is just me and my herd.

We used Wal-Mart's special kitty wet food and Chandler was fine on it; just so long as we used the higher protein, lower carb flavors. Would still be using it if he would eat it - he got to liking Fancy Feast and will only eat that. In fact, it was one of the first foods he began honeymooning on...

If you can find it 'nature's variety raw rabbit' is super nutritious and you can serve it as one meal a day...or every few days.
It comes in frozen mini hamburger patties like, and you defrost a few and just give one or two. each pattie is one ounce.
Tom used to LOVE it. Not so much now...but he is sick.
Also has like 3 carbs.

NV raw comes in two sizes, the mini 1 ounce medallions which Lori is referring to and the larger hamburger-sized patties. The mini medallions is an ideal sized for a cat. Commerical raw pet food in general can be pricey. NV has trial sized bags of 12 medallions that you can buy at specialty pet stores for like $5 or so if you are interested in trying it. The trial sized bags come in chicken or beef.

There's nothing wrong nutritionally with Special Kitty. It's a complete diet for cats. It doesn't have the best ingredients but it's not a bad food. Fancy Feast, Friskies, and many other big name brands you can find at Wal Mart and regular supermarkets and pet stores are just fine and aren't expensive. Just be sure to print out the food charts and take them with you to the store so you can be sure to get only the low carb varieties.
 
There is also a lot of Sophisticat (PetsMart's brand) varieties, that are on Janet & Binky's list that are very low carb.
The last time I bought them at PetsMart, they were .38 cents for a 5.5 ounce can. My cats prefer the Fancy Feast, but will eat the Sophisticat or Friskies that I leave out for their lunch time snacks, in the timed feeder, for them while I'm a work.
