Hi everyone ! I have a question with regard the food for Misho. He is currently on Integra Protect Diabetic product of Animonda Germany.
Here is the analyses :
Protein 11
Fat 5,2
Fiber 0,3
Ash 1,6

Starch 0
Total sugars 0,12
moisture 80
> 63 % meat and animal derivatives (25 % poultry, beef, pork), broth

and the one I have ordered a trial packet now Granatapet product of Germany as well :

Calf and rabbit (72% consisting of: 36% beef, 36% rabbit meat), meat broth, 1% pomegranate seeds, 1% salmon oil, minerals (calcium carbonate)
Protein: 11%
Fat content: 6.40%
Crude ash: 1.90%
Crude fiber: 0.30%
Moisture content: 80%

the other type is Pollock and seafood
Protein: 10.40%
Fat content: 5.80%
Crude ash: 2%
Crude fiber: 0.40%
Moisture content: 81%

With his current food of Integra Protect Misho has 10.6 oz as per producer's food recommendation with Granatapet he must have 3,5 - 7 oz . I am a bit confused now as with the new food he will have less and definitely he will be unhappy as Misho has a remarkable appetite  and second I don't know which food is better for him.
Integra protect is also more expensive if I buy him Granatapet we will significantly cut the expenses.
I know these two brands are available for Europeans and most likely you have no experience with both of them but I hope someone can give me advice. Thank you !

Re: Wet Granatapet vs Integra Protect Diabetic- Animonda foo

http://scheyderweb.com/cats/catfood.html is a carb calculator

They all look low carb.

calories per gram:
3.5 protein
8.5 fat <- more fat means more calories in a feeding. this may be why they give differing amounts
3.5 carbohydrate

Re: Wet Granatapet vs Integra Protect Diabetic- Animonda foo

Hello Di,

I've fed my civvie Granatapet. It's very high quality and she tends to eat less of it than other foods (same goes for Om Nom Nom canned).

The Granatapet foods you listed are better from a carbohydrate content perspective than the Integra Protect Diabetic.

  • Granatapet Beef & Rabbit Recipe: kcal per 100g = 94; calories from carbs = 1.5%
  • Granatapet Pollock & Seafood Recipe: kcal per 100g = 87; calories from carbs = 1.6%
  • Integra Protect Diabetic: kcal per 100g = 89; calories from carbs = 7.4%

The cans of Granatapet look like the 100g size. They also do 200g and 400g cans, so maybe if you ordered the larger tins you might be able to make further savings?

Re: Wet Granatapet vs Integra Protect Diabetic- Animonda foo

I was very surprised when I realized that the Diabetic Integra is such high in carbs. I mean it is in the range under 10% but there are much more low carb brands. I didn't know how to calculate it but I read it somewhere. Now when I see the numbers you gave I definitely will switch Misho to Granatapet not only because it is much cheaper than Integra though still quite expensive food for us. The reason why my trial order was in 100g cans was that my own cats won't on no reason eat refrigerated food. They are very spoiled dudes  and only eat freshly open can . And just to be on the safe side because I was not sure this food will do for Misho I bought the small ones. I order it through zooplus and they have such a wide variety of very quality food and compared to prices I pay in Bulgaria they are cheaper ( delivering directly from Germany) not to speak that we don't have most of the brands here as they are considered expensive and people won't buy them. I don't give you link to Zooplus as on some unknown reason both web sites with English menu dot co-uk and dot com do not offer Granatapet  but they do have Grau which I heard is also very good food.
Anyway, we switch to Granatapet ,they also have other flavor like Duck & Poultry ; Calf & rabbits ;Lamb & Turkey ; Pollock & Turkey; Fish & Venison liver ragout; Fish & Venison liver ragout; Redfish & Chicken; Chicken & shrimp; Wild & Duck. I see that they slightly differ in analysis so I can order different flavors .Misho eats everything, poor baby it is never enough for him...
Thank you both for helping me make the right choice :YMHUG:

P.S. BJM , I clench and gnash my teeth but I am afraid to not loose them soon nailbite_smile.BG creeping and creeping up ...

Re: Wet Granatapet vs Integra Protect Diabetic- Animonda foo

Have a look at Monique and Spooky's post in the forum sticky on Calculating Food Carb %. It shows you how to calculate the 'as fed' and dry matter carbs, plus the calorie content of the foods you're interested in:

http://www.felinediabetes.com/FDMB/viewtopic.php?f=28&t=27876#p284362

Other low carb quality foods from Zooplus include Catz Finefood, Smilla and Bozita. Bozita is GMO-free. I had a look at the Grau products but IIRC they were not as low in carbs as others available through Zooplus.

I've started feeding Saoirse the Smilla food after Cassandra kindly sent me a sample to try. It's very good quality, not too rich, very low carb and great value for money (much less than Granatapet over here). She really enjoys it.

Do you have a microwave oven? If yes, then you could gently warm refrigerated food before serving it. Another option would be to heat some water and then mix it into the refrigerated food before serving to warm it up a little.

Thank you for the hug. Here's one for you :YMHUG: and some fusses for your furry babies. cat_pet_icon And here are some extra fusses for Misho. cat_pet_icon (I think it's wonderful the way you are caring for him. )

Read over my Glucometer Notes from my signature link to remind yourself just how inaccurate the meters are, especially at higher numbers.

:-D No way- I have tried different tricks but with no success. I know it is my mistake, they are adopted cats and I wanted to give them the best I could and in a way compensate for what they didn't have before and this is the outcome I guess  But that's really OK with me.
Misho is very ,very sweet boy and absolutely gentle patient. He never complains, when I tell him Come here boy we need to do the test he sometimes just slowly approaches me with that sweet look saying - Can't we just forget about this  but quietly lies next to me and waits for the procedure and I love the way he does it ,somehow resigned. So I ordered for him some treats sugar free from this very online shop and Misho loves them. I chose some with mint and one I have read here on the forum is a good one Thrive- freeze dried tuna.
His only problem is the food , if I could give him food every time he begs for, he would be completely happy ...
Thank you for the links you both have given when I have time I will take a close look at them.
BJM,

this put a smile on my face. I haven't yet taken a look at the link but the way you try to calm me down just makes me feel better :thumbup

Re: Wet Granatapet vs Integra Protect Diabetic- Animonda foo

The guidelines on the cans are just that - guidelines. If he is losing weight still, you may feed him some more than that, up to 50%. We do suggest doing it in divided meals, if possible, to spread out the work load on any remaining pancreatic function. A way to do this is to freeze part of the mean to be eaten as it thaws.

Re: Wet Granatapet vs Integra Protect Diabetic- Animonda foo

The Cosma Snackie freeze-dried treats that Zooplus do are good as well. Saoirse gets the chicken ones when she has her tests and insulin injections.

Your cats are blessed to have you as their person, Di. :YMHUG:

Have you fed a diabetic with this food ? And do you think there is a chance it could be a reason for raised BG readings ? This question may sound silly but the thing is Misho's high BG readings lately( especially pre shots) just fell in with the change of food. Is there any reason this new food could be just not good for him ? We spotted a health problem yesterday and Misho is now on antibiotic but I am asking this question as just to check what will happen at AM shot yesterday I fed Misho his old food and at PM his new one and I think there is a difference in the numbers. If I am wrong at least I want to exclude the new food as reason for these nasty red pre shots and highs I see lately.

Re: Wet Granatapet vs Integra Protect Diabetic- Animonda foo

Hello Di,

I've not had a chance to try Saoirse on the Granatapet yet because of her pancreatitis problems. It will be a while before I get to see if she will like it so I've no idea how it may affect BG readings.

You say that Misho is being treated with an antibiotic. From what I've learned since Saoirse was diagnosed, infections can raise BG. Does the health problem you mention also coincide with Misho's higher numbers?
