? wet food suggestions that cats like

Hello friends. I had a kitty who died of diabetes at age 12 and was on the board then (in 2012). Turned out Spot had many other issues, and diabetes was just one of them. After he passed away, I got a kitten about two weeks later. So, I have two cats, one 15 and one 5 (I got her in 2012). Ever since my cat Spot had diabetes and even before, I gave my cats wet food. But my cats seem so fussy now. I wonder what people now are feeding their cats. Fancy Feast classic isn't really a healthy food, and never fills them up. It also seems to make them kind of crazy acting. I know that sounds odd, but it does. Maybe because they're still hungry? There's some reason they call it kitty crack! Anyway...a lot of the grain-free foods are high in carbs with their gravies, etc. I also would give my cats Friskies pate but now it looks like there's rice in it. They ate some Soulistic chicken Karma and then got over it. I also tried Weruva and Wellness (turkey) with little enthusiam. They seem to only like Fancy Feast (I give them turkey and the chicken classic), but I want to give them something they'll eat that's substantial yet yummy to them. I was hoping for some suggestions. I try to give them mostly turkey and chicken wet food but sometimes give them fish. It almost seems the more money I spend on a can of wet, grain-free cat food, the more it is snubbed. Sigh. I wish I could just give them the same food every day and not keep trying different stuff. Many cans I end up throwing out. As far as their weight goes, they are both svelte--the older cat is 7 lbs and the 5 yr old is maybe 8.

All this said, my cats are very fabulous creatures and give me great joy. Of course!

For a chicken suggestion, if your kitty isn’t picky on texture, we have had good luck with Weruva paw lickin chicken. Both of our kitties love it. Instead of high carb gravy with the meat it has what can best be described as a thick chicken juice. Good luck!

Right now my diabetic kitty is eating Purina Pro Plan True Nature classics. All my guys like Tiki Cat and VeRus but both are a little pricey for my budget. Another one they all really LOVED was Nature's Variety Instinct Frozen Raw chicken.
 
I tried so many different high-end wet foods, and my girls just would not eat enough of them. (They liked Weruva Paw Lickin' Chicken for 1 or 2 cans then turned their noses up at it completely.) After I went through all of the 'boutique' foods, I started trying the 'grocery store' foods that are low carb. Sheba Perfect Portions Pate Savory Chicken Entree and FF Classic Chicken Feast were the two that they ate the most of. Over time, they stopped liking the Sheba so much, but they have continued to eat the FF. It was not my first choice, by a long shot, but they will eat it consistently, so that is what we went with. It is not perfect, but it is not bad either. Look how many people on here feed it to their cats!

I add a tiny bit of pumpkin to two of their meals each day, and I add a little bone broth to the other two meals. I also shred a very small amount of chicken breast and throw that on top. The chicken and bone broth were initially just Mia's shot treats, but I added some to my civvies food a couple of times, and she loved it, so it became a regular thing. Both are good for them, and they love them. The eat even more food since I started that.

I am curious, how often do you feed them and how many cans?

I happened to have bought a can of Paw Lickin Chicken and they did like that. Good option! I can't buy a case anymore because they get over food so easily. But I will get more.

Gosh, your kits sound like mine. I usually feed them in the morning, in the afternoon and at night. I like your suggestion of adding pumpkin (what does that do?) and bone broth. Thanks!

Fortiflora is a probiotic (well, that's what it's advertised as but there are much better probiotics out there) but it's made from the same stuff they spray on the outside of kibble to make it so yummy. It comes in packets and a little sprinkled on top of food makes most cats eat just about anything. It's available on Amazon and also on Chewy

It's also available at a lot of vets offices (but usually costs more)

We use it more for a "topper" to get finicky cats to eat than as an actual probiotic.

Pumpkin helps to add fiber, which helps with both constipation and diarrhea .....real pumpkin (not pumpkin pie filling) is low carb and a lot of cats like it well enough to eat off the spoon

I started adding that when they had some issues with pooping. They were not going enough, and it was tiny and hard. Pumpkin helps with digestive help - constipation, diarrhea, even upset stomach/indigestion. I asked the vet it if was okay as a long-term solution, and he said yes, that is what he recommends. I just add a small amount. In total, for a day, they get about 1tsp each.
 

It looks like rice is the 6th ingrediant for Friskies Liver and Chicken food. If you and the dr. think it's ok, that's another option. My cats like Friskies pates, plus it's cheap.

Re Nature's Variety, Is it ok to give cats some raw and some wet canned food?

If you mean giving them a mix of raw and canned, sure, it's no problem. That's what my guys ate, Fancy Feast and Nature's Variety raw. I usually just put the raw on top of the canned (didn't stir them together) and they'd eat it all. I've also given canned at one meal and raw at another. As long as they're used to the food it shouldn't be an issue.

Can I ask what kind of pumpkin you're using? Like an actual pumpkin or canned pumpkin? I need something to help with my kitties poops too! :(

I tried putting 100% pumpkin from Fresh Market, just a bit, on the old standby, classic chicken Fancy Feast. They won't eat the food. But thanks for the tips. Other cats aren't as fussy, I don't think. My cats really don't like anything that's not meat (or fish).

All you need to add is a teaspoon. Try it in a stinky fish flavor.

Why are you against FF classic. It is recommended by the vet on this website.

I tried this food, the turkey, since you recommended it, and my cats gobbled it up. Unfortunately, just like with Fancy Feast, I think it may be junk food. I am glad to know it is a good food for diabetic cats, however. I may rotate this with FF and then a high-end (expensive) food like Weruva Paw Lickin Chicken or Nature's Variety raw food.
