I’m on a quest to find Howie a new food as his current food changed formulas which won’t work for carbs any longer. I’ve been lucky that this (outgoing) food followed Dr. Lisa’s %ME recommendations of greater than 50% protein, 20-40% fat, closer to 5% carbs, and lower phosphorous. His other requirements are that it must be a pate (no teeth) and must be free of carageenan and guar gum due to GI issues. So yes, he’s kind of a big diva!
I know Dr. Lisa says no fish. But a lot of the foods out there that meet her recommendations have fish in it (I’m trying to at least look at ones that have other proteins in it). I can find foods without fish but have less than 40% protein, 60%+ fat, but good carbs and decent phosphorous. What’s the lesser of the evils? A lot of food has guar gum in it but no carageenan. He just had a GI issue with something that had guar gum I didn’t realize was in there. I can only assume that was the cause. I don’t want to completely overthink all these percentages of protein and fat, but want to make sure he has the best food I can find him to keep him healthy and BGs at good levels (but doesn’t totally break the bank)!
