Bo was diagnosed in late 2010 and was able to get OTJ a few weeks later after changing his diet along with insulin. He has been eating canned Wellness Turkey or Wellness Chicken since then. For a few months, he was also eating a few pieces of dry food and once a week, I would give him canned Wellness Signature Selects either chicken or turkey since it had clear gravy. I recently noticed that Wellness Signature Selects was not made in the USA like the other Wellness products. It is a "product of Thailand." Once I saw that I knew I would not give any more of that to any of my cats. Plus it had starch in it.

Bo is a large cat. Two feet long and two feet tall. He weighs about 22 pounds. He just turned 12 in October. He is very sweet and so cooperative for testing and shots.

One of my other cats is a crystal cat and has to have his urine checked regularly for regular infections. Every now and then I am also able to check Bo's urine. In August, I used a urine test strip to test Bo's urine and it went immediately to dark brown indicating high glucose levels. I took the urine to the vet to verify and check for urinary infection. No infection noted. I took him in for a check up in the event he had some other infection. Nothing showed up except a small lump in the breast area. He had surgery to remove it and the test showed it was benign. So we watched his BG for a couple of weeks before starting Lantus at 1 unit once daily on 10/18/14. Now he is back solely on canned Wellness Turkey or Chicken. We home test so he gets freeze dried chicken or turkey for treats. Then on 10/29/14 we changed to 1 unit twice a day. But i am not seeing much change in numbers during the day. I was hoping that some of you who have had more experience than I have could look at his spreadsheet and give me some advice.

Also, how can I get the link to his spreadsheet to just say "Bo's SS" so I can add the type of insulin and dose to my signature? With the long link address, I am at the maximum for characters that I can include.

Thanks for your help. Without the help of the people on this board before, I would have lost him by following the first vet's instructions. We have a new vet now who treats only cats and is wonderful!

Forgot to add that he is not drinking any extra water. I add 1/2 cup water to one 12 oz can for four cats at each meal (morning and afternoon). We always have extra food left over so he is not eating more than normal. There was a day or two when he drank a tiny bit before we started the insulin again. .

7) If you would like a "word" link, such as Cosmo's SS, use the following code: text. replace "link" with your spreadsheet URL, and replace 'text' with the name of your spreadsheet.

it will look like this

Code: Select all
Cosmo's SS

This is from the TECH SUPPORT forum -- edit your signature to look like the line above

You've only been giving BID for 3 days -- give it a bit longer. Also, you may need to increase the dose if these numbers continue.

Not all kitties are lucky to be diet controlled, and some kitties need insulin again. Give Bo scritches and loving.

Thanks so much!

Don't worry. Bo always gets lots of scratches and kisses. He is absolutely the best patient we could have asked for. He has already been back twice this morning wanting his "ears checked" but I told him to wait a little while. :-D

You might want to go revisit the food chart again.

or even search a little here, the search box up there on the right.

Wellness went thru some changes and I think many of their foods are higher carb now than they used to be.
You might want to find alternate foods.....
that could be a big part of his higher numbers.

Thanks! I did notice several other Wellness choices now available that have gravy but I definitely stayed away from those except for the Signature Selects one meal a week.(That has stopped now.) We use what I guess would be the "original" Wellness. The list from 2012 lists them as having 4% carbs but I do wonder about their recipe sometimes as the pieces of carrots seem to be rather large in some cans. About a year ago, they were all throwing up the turkey that we were buying. I got some from a different lot number and they quit throwing up. The company did not admit to having any issues with any of the food. My four inside cats actually think I take the "good food" to my two outside cats who eat Fancy Feast classic chicken. If they only knew!
Thanks again.

WOW! The one meal a week that was not the regular Wellness was 29% carbs. Their regular Wellness is only 4%. That could have been the trigger that made him get back on insulin. Thanks for sharing this! I appreciate it.
