Bo was diagnosed in late 2010 and was able to get OTJ a few weeks later after changing his diet along with insulin. He has been eating canned Wellness Turkey or Wellness Chicken since then. For a few months, he was also eating a few pieces of dry food and once a week, I would give him canned Wellness Signature Selects either chicken or turkey since it had clear gravy. I recently noticed that Wellness Signature Selects was not made in the USA like the other Wellness products. It is a "product of Thailand." Once I saw that I knew I would not give any more of that to any of my cats. Plus it had starch in it.
Bo is a large cat. Two feet long and two feet tall. He weighs about 22 pounds. He just turned 12 in October. He is very sweet and so cooperative for testing and shots.
One of my other cats is a crystal cat and has to have his urine checked regularly for regular infections. Every now and then I am also able to check Bo's urine. In August, I used a urine test strip to test Bo's urine and it went immediately to dark brown indicating high glucose levels. I took the urine to the vet to verify and check for urinary infection. No infection noted. I took him in for a check up in the event he had some other infection. Nothing showed up except a small lump in the breast area. He had surgery to remove it and the test showed it was benign. So we watched his BG for a couple of weeks before starting Lantus at 1 unit once daily on 10/18/14. Now he is back solely on canned Wellness Turkey or Chicken. We home test so he gets freeze dried chicken or turkey for treats. Then on 10/29/14 we changed to 1 unit twice a day. But i am not seeing much change in numbers during the day. I was hoping that some of you who have had more experience than I have could look at his spreadsheet and give me some advice.
Also, how can I get the link to his spreadsheet to just say "Bo's SS" so I can add the type of insulin and dose to my signature? With the long link address, I am at the maximum for characters that I can include.
Thanks for your help. Without the help of the people on this board before, I would have lost him by following the first vet's instructions. We have a new vet now who treats only cats and is wonderful!
Forgot to add that he is not drinking any extra water. I add 1/2 cup water to one 12 oz can for four cats at each meal (morning and afternoon). We always have extra food left over so he is not eating more than normal. There was a day or two when he drank a tiny bit before we started the insulin again. .
