We're back again!

Well after a more than a year of being diet controlled. My man and me are back.

I carried on testing monthly, after Splodgy went OTJ and the beginning of this month, his BGL was up to 28+ (504+ mg%). Took him to the vets and got him back on insulin and we are slowly trying to get the DB under control again.

Problem is, his teeth are rotten. He needs to have most of them out asap, but as he's not regulated yet, the vets wont do it. Not sure how I feel about this. I know the risks of having a dental with DB, but surely his BG wont regulate while his mouth is this bad! They have said they will consider doing it next week if he is a little more regulated.

I did a curve a couple of days ago and I have now lowered the dose of the insulin as his levels were dropping VERY low. The vet was not happy at me doing this, as she said I should have stuck with the dose for 7days. Surely a BGL of 2.2 (39 mg%) warrants lowering the dose.

Splodge, as before is being a complete gent about it all. Its me whos feeling bad again about the constant stabbing!

Anyway, just wanted to say 'Hi' again.
xx

Sorry you are back. But with a 39, it does look like the insulin is working well. (And yes, sounds like a dose reduction is in order). Hope you can get the dental done - could make a huge difference.

Thanks Sue! I just needed to hear that I was doing right. Had I listened to the vets first time round, Splodgy would probably be dead now. Funny but I seem to have lost my confidence in trusting my own judgement this time.

Grrr.. sounds like his mouth may be so bad, it's what got him back on the juice again.

I hope your vet agrees to do the dental very soon! How regulated do they want him if he's dipping down to 39?? That's hypo territory. :/

I don't understand a vet saying dental can't be done when diabetic.
If the bad teeth are the reason for the return, then the teeth have to go!
Plenty of cats have dentals while in the process of being regulated, what other health issues are there, any?

I had Shadoe for her first dental and she was on 14u Lantus. She had a good cleaning and the single bad tooth extracted.
Her insulin needs plunged after that time, proving to me that the one tooth was part of her high insulin needs.

What is your vet's definition of regulated?
Why not tell your vet that you want the dental done?
If you had a toothache and were diabetic, how would you feel if your dentist said nope, not till your regulated.

Can your vet explain the reasons why a dental can't be done?

Same here Gayle. I was told by my vet that doing a dental could/should lower BG for diabetics...

Sorry that you had to come back, Pria.
I just went through the same thing with my vet. She kept telling me that Klinger's teeth are in bad shape, but I don't want to do the dental until he's regulated. I finally called her and said that I'm fighting a losing battle because he's not going to be regulated because his teeth are so bad and I understand the risks but it's my decision and I'll live with it if Klinger doesn't make it out of the anesthesia. She agreed and he had eight teeth extracted three weeks ago. He's still not regulated, but we are making progress.
If they're not willing to do it, could you try another vet?

Thanks for the replies guys.

Splodge has no other health issues other than his teeth and I have decided to tell the vets I want them doing asap.

Good.
Your cat. Your money. Your decision.

If the teeth are really bad, you are likely going to get a brand new happy happy cat once the dental is done.

Good for you! I would have insisted on a dental for Cuddles, had she not had CRF. (renal failure) She NEVER had a dental in all her 19 years.. and her teeth were horrible. She was still OTJ, but I have no idea HOW with how gross her teeth were! I think she just had really great genes.. and although she had lots of plaque on her teeth, I don't think any were rotten or anything. Instead, we did pulse therapy with antibiotics. Seems she'd get these UTI's every so often, most likely because of her teeth.. so I'd just give antibiotics every couple of months, and that kept her happy & healthy! Had it just been her teeth, and BG's, I would have had it done. But because her kidneys were compromised, I just couldn't think of putting her under for a dental.

Please keep us posted as to when it's scheduled!

They are REALLY bad! She thinks he will lose nearly all of them. Funny thing is, he hasnt shown any sign at all of a sore mouth! He hasnt been quiet or off his food and his breath doesnt smell at all. When he first became diabetic, he had an awful mouth infection and showed most of the classic signs!

Steph I have an old girl now who's mouth is smelly, but I know she doesnt have very long left and I cant bear the thought of putting her through a GA. While she happy and still eating, Im going to just let her be.

If you think she's either in pain, or has an infection, ask your vet about pain meds, or possibly pulse therapy with antibiotics. It's what got Cuddles through her mouth issues (well, made her mouth a NON-issue) until cancer ended up taking her from me.
