Hi

I'm Jack's human, Wendy. He's nine years old, and my "grumpy old man cat". He's alternately called Jack Jack, Jackson, Fuzzbutt, Furface, and Jack Sparrow Pirate Kitty.

We found out this week that he's diabetic after a couple of weeks of flooding the box and a couple of "flopping" incidents. Also found out he'd put on four pounds over the course of a couple of years. He's on 1 unit of Lantus twice a day, and we're trying to find cost-effective foods to feed him.

Mr. Google referred me to the site, then our vet tech backed it up. I greatly appreciate the resource - I'm more than a little overwhelmed and worried about how I'm going to afford all this. I've managed to get over the hurdle of giving him his shots, so I imagine we'll do ok.

Hi and welcome Wendy and Jack to the forum.:)
Great you have started to give the shots!
It is all pretty overwhelming in the beginning but you have come to the right place for help and support.
1 unit of Lantus insulin twice a day is a good start.
Home testing of the blood sugars will save you time visiting the vet and money spent on curves you can do at home. Also most importantly it will keep Jack safe from low numbers and will tell you how the insulin is working in his body.
Here is a link to how to home test. We will help you get started

Here is a link to another post where someone was asking about the cost of things....you will find good information there.

Also here is a link to FAQ where you will find lots of information.

It is a steep learning curve in the beginning so ask lots of questions. We are happy to help you.
Here is the link to the Main Forum where you can ask anything you need to know. There are many more people over there than on the welcome page.

Welcome to the board. You will definitely find the information and support you are looking for here. I second all Bron's information. We were all new once and overwhelmed. We read, asked questions and learned. It's a bit of a mountain to climb at first, but you are here because you love "fuzzbutt" Jack and want him to feel better. So do we.
