I was wondering what the best way to find out the carb content in food is? I want to calculate carbs for the wellness healthy indulgence pouches. I know they won't be super low in carbs but I have to feed tigger what he will eat. On binkys list they have something listed under "healthy indulgence" but I don't think it's wellness. The flavor combos do not match up to the wellness varieties. It must be another food all together.


So What is the easiest way to do this? I am absolutely horrible with math :( and I have tried to figure it out and understand it on my own but I am having problems! Any help that I can get would be wonderful!

Hi Annemarie,

You can either call them or email them (Wellness). They are very good about giving all the info. That's how I got the 3oz series. Just make sure you ask for the 'as fed' numbers.

Ok I will do that. Melanie, I did receive your list, thank you! Im just wondering about the as fed amounts...do you still have to do more math to figure out the carbs? I do see that you listed the carbs but the percent numbers were so much higher than binkys list, for example the wellness list says 2.65% and everything on binkys is just single numbers no decimal point? Again I have no math skills so bear with me :)
 
These were not on Binky's list unless they just got up. These are the actual amounts also. I'll go look again but the last time I looked, only the old 5oz ones were on Binky's list.

I see what you mean now. They either rounded them up to get a full number or used another formula. There is a formula posted on the board. I remember seeing it but not where, probably tech?. I'll have to look and check with Julia & Bandit. She is going to post them for me and knows much more than I about it. Let me ask her and get back to you.

Sqeem3, You have to do it through the source page, the html, and I'm very rusty at html. I could figure it out but I don't have time right now and it is a big job since I haven't done it in so long. If I get time before Julia does and get an answer to Annemarie's question, I will give it a shot but right now with Racci sick and requiring so much time, I barely have time to sit down at the computer and come on the board while doing my chores and cooking, etc. I'm sure you all know how that is though.

Melanie, you don't have to edit anything through html...you just go here: http://binkyspage.tripod.com/foodfaq.html. There is a link that says "Excel Spreadsheet", and you click on that. You should be able to download the spreadsheet if you have excel, which I believe you do. You plug in the as-fed numbers and you're good to go. I always do the math, and then double check myself with the spreadsheet to make sure.

The carb percentage on Binky's chart (and the other newer spreadsheet) are calculated as "percent of calories", or "per 100 calories". The percentage you received from the manufacturer is the as-fed, or dry matter value. The Binky FAQ is a great document to read through to understand how the values are calculated.
 
Julia, the only excel link there is for the conversion info, not the spreadsheet itself. Neither sheet 2 or 3 have the spreadsheet with all the cans listed. Should I be copying and pasting all the old ones one with the new ones and inserting them?

I can't find another link for excel.

Read further down the page, under "Q. How do you calculate the numbers on the table?" The answer says:

A. The numbers on the table are expressed as "percent of calories" (protein, fat, carbohydrate) or "amount per 100 calories" (fiber, phosphorus), based on as-fed information provided by the manufacturer. For pet foods, I follow the usual assumption that protein and carbohydrate each contain 3.5 calories per gram, and fat contains 8.5 calories per gram. You can use this Excel spreadsheetto see how the calculations are done, or read the longer explanation:

If you click on where it says "Excel Spreadsheet" in that paragraph, you can download the file. Right below it is a explanation of how the math is done.

Could you post the as fed numbers you got from Wellness so that anyone here can plug the numbers into Janet's Excel spreadsheet to get the actual nutritional values?

That link you're talking about has the formula only. I can put the new stuff in alone I guess but I still don't understand how it gets submitted. I noticed one of the workbook pages says submit. Do I put the new stuff on that page and will it automatically submit it or do I click on it? I was thinking more on the lines of plugging it right into the ss itself but does it do it automatically?

I tried to put my excel list here and couldn't. It fell apart and was too hard to read. The same thing happened in a pm. I was able to send as an attachment to email to the people who asked for it. Maybe I could send as an attachment to a pm? I didn't try that yet.

You should try to get Protein, Fat, Carbohydrate, Fiber.Phosphorus,calories. I got more than that on mine as you see though, sodium, etc. Whatever you can get from htem.
in as fed values.

No. no. The Excel spreadsheet I am talking about is this one from Janet's Food FAQs page that you have to download http://binkyspage.tripod.com/calories.xls

It is for your use only. You plug in the as fed numbers into the Amount column and it will automatically do the math and give you the exact nutritional number. There is no Submit button or link on the spreadsheet. Once you've plugged all your as fed values in and gotten the exact nutritional values, you can post them here on FDMB and/or send them to Janet so she can add them to her food charts.

You can upload your Excel spreadsheet to Google Documents and then publish it like you would with the bg spreadsheet and share the link with everyone.

Or just type it all out in a post like this "[Name of food] protein as fed number/fat as fed number/carb as fed number/fiber as fed number/phosphorus as fed number" Kind of a pain to do but someone will be able to figure it out and calculate he nutritional info.
 
I can't find that link anywhere on the faq page I'm on and I can't dl it from here. It doesn't let me. Can you give me the link of the food faq page you have? Maybe I'm on a bad page. Some redirectors keep trying to steer me away every time I go there. Maybe she moved it.
