Winnie, our Himmalayan Siamese mix was diagnosed with diabetes in March 2009. He was put on insulin. We home tested and started feeding him Wellness
Core and took him off all kibbles. Gradually we had to decrease the insulin until December of '09 when he was able to go off insulin completely. Recently (around 10/7/10) he started vomiting. Initially his blood sugar was alright (119) which is higher than usual (97-103) We made an appointment with a vet at the vet group we usually go to. His vet wasn't available so he saw someone else. She tested his blood , x-rayed him and gave him an ultra sound. She thought she saw "something" in his
abdoman so did abdominal surgery. She didn't find anything but took samples of his liver, pancreas and Bowels. He has been determined to have a urinary track infection, Iritable bowel diseas as well as his diabetes. About a week later we were scheduled to go on a 10 day trip so our friends that we exchange cat sitting with took care of him and our other two very healthy cats. When we got back we tested him and he was 380 so we rushed him to the vet and he is on insulin again as well as antibiotics. How could all of this happen when to the best of our knowledge nothing changed. Has anyone heard of a problem with the Wellness food?
Thank you for any help you can suggest.

Hello: my cat Prudence is going on 6 mos OTJ and I do feed Wellness mixed with Special Kitty. Have you always fed Wellness or is this something new right before you went on your trip? The only thing I can think of as far as your cat hitting the 300's is that... while being with the pet sitters, someone gave your cat regular cat treats or dry food? or a higher cab canned food? I remember reading about Dr. Elizabeth Hodgkins having this happen to her. She got her own cat off of insulin, but while her cat was in boarding... even though she told them NOT to feed certain types of food someone managed to give treats & dry food which put her cat back on insulin.

I hope you will be able to get Winnie back to OTJ. Not sure if this helps, but wanted to share my thoughts.

Thank you for your suggestions. The problems started before we left and our sitters come to our house (just as we go to theirs). We feel like it is less stress on the cats. They know Winnie is diabetic and can't have kibbles. They even gave him shots when he was on insulin

Did the urinary tract infection correspond with the timing of the diabetes? UTIs, infections, bad teeth, stress, etc, all of that can lead to a cat coming out of remission.

I realize that you have an IBD diagnosis, but sometimes that bowel can simply be inflamed due to vomitting and may not necessarily be IBD. Did you get full bloodwork done? Wondering if the thyroid level was checked. Hypert kitties can have similar symptoms to FDs including vomitting. Hypert kitties can also get UTIs, hence the reason I'm asking about the thyroid level, the T4 value.

Are you hometesting now?

Yes we are home testing now. I also am supposed to take him to the vet at 8:10AM tomorrow fasting. He is going to love that since he usually eats at 6:30am. I will ask the vet about the thyroid. WE did get full blood work done. As for his problems, it was like all of it happened at once. Thank you for responding.

What's the vet appointment for? If you're hometesting, you don't need to go to the vet for a curve, assuming that's what the appointment is for. Testing at home is less stressful and will give you a better idea of how your cat is responding to insulin.

At the vet's office your cat will most likely feel stress and have increased blood sugar. Basing a dose increase or reduction on possibly stress induced numbers is not a good idea.
