Wow the Health team has really been awesome about getting Sheryl and Ash in fighting shape.

Great work Lori et al! :thumbup

I guess the keytone issue is still up in the air?

gator i'm not sure about the ketones. did you see the pic she posted of 3 strips? one was hers, one her cats and one was water...the only one that looked like possible ketones was sheryl!
if there are ketones at all they are very trace, very small.
i hope she comes on over soon.
did you agree gator with the 1u dosing? i felt pretty strongly that the 2-3 units pumped for 3 weeks w/o testing was not correct #'s. also the kitty stayed in a very upsetting place in the vets office...right next to surgery! i hope ashley did'nt see or smell ----blood!

Well there's dry fud going on too - so if that is eliminated then it would make even more sense to drop back. BUT also test for keytones too since that seems to be in the picture and be ready to increase.

Hi All,

Thanks for the warm welcome! I think we are officially off the dry food. I haven't given it to them since two nights ago and they seem ok with that. I've been putting lots of canned food out with water to hydrate the kitties and keep the food moist. My house stinks like cat food though!

Ooh...i just thought of another question, which may be a little gross for my first post here, but does anyone elses sugar kitties poop stink to high holy hell? Her's is much lighter in color and stinkier than her brother Dudley's.

I do need to get the U-100 syringes and am working on this. Please check Ashley's SS and let me know your thoughts.

Thanks,
Sheryl & Ashley

Hi Sheryl :)

You need to try and get some tests to show when the nadir or lowest point is....and have you been able to get another ketone test done? Deanie is a lab tech with years of feline diabetes experience and if she thinks your strip may have shown ketones I'd not second guess her...

Jen

It's probably more moist? Moist poop is probably smellier than dry poop... Moist poop is easier on the colon...

We are obviously not scared of gross [or I'm not I guess]

And hopefully it will even out as the GI gets used to the change. If not after a couple weeks then raise the issue again.

hi sheryl, the smells should either decline or you become used to them (with the food) i don't know which but i can't smell it at all.
as far as dose raising...here's the dilema. you just dropped your dry food. your numbers while not good are better. i think if it were me i'd ride out another 2 or 3 cycles if you can get some testing in. the food change alone may drop her 50 or so bg's.
it looks like we need a little more data. and then if you must raise with pro zinc we raise in smaller increments of .2 or .3

that's how it looks to me.
please note all that ashley had been on 2u bid for 3 weeks prior to testing with the testing beginning with some 'black' numbers :?

this is charliemeow (claudia and charlie) just a week or so ago.
i thought you might like to see what a panick liver looks like. rather a bungie cord effect.
and the numbers don't even have to go very low to have it happen, just lower than the cat's body has become accustomed too. btw, claudia has very gradually raised her dose for what appears to be her high dose kitty.

Hi Sheryl,
In answer to your question about when to raise the dose:
-you have had them off dry for 2 days- it takes a little longer than that for the dry to work its way "out", so I'd give it longer,
-and tonight you saw a +4 yellow, so your numbers are still falling.

I would really like to see a couple more days on this dose. You may be pleasantly surprised. You can always increase, but its a pain to decrease/jump around. Lets make SURE that 1u isn't gonna do it

I didn't read your previous post and I see there is some question about ketones. Can't you test her again? with a girl cat, could you slide a flat spoon under her in the LB to get a drop or two?
Obviously if ketones are a factor, we move faster. I've actually gotten consistent readings off of pee that hasn't soaked into the litter yet- my litter doesn't seem to change the result.

Some folks complain of diarrhea /smelly poo when they switch to canned. a Probiotic like Fortiflora might help if that happens- it worked for a friend.

Welcome Sheryl and Ashley! About the food smells: that drove me crazy in the beginning...but I also had morning sickness. My pregnant nose is very sensitive! I barely notice it anymore. But I'm lucky in that Charlie scarfs it down as soon as I set it out, so it doesn't sit all day. My civie gets wet too that she let's sit and she just nibbles on it. But I don't even really notice that anymore. I avoid fishy flavors which I find more offensive (they're also not as good for kitty).

Hi and Welcome Sheryl and Ashley,

You have gotten very good advise.

Good for you for getting their food changed. Smelly poo seems to be part of the food change but should settle down as the kitties get used to it. Although every once in a while Harley still deposits one in the LB that sends me outside. I agree with Gator, I don't think you can gross us out at this point. Poo, pee, puck we discuss it all.

When you get the U100 syringes be sure to get the ones with the half unit markings, it makes it much easier to see and measure your doses, especially when you get to micro doses. I get mine from Walmart, Gator used a different brand but I can't remember which one.

I agree with everyone else about staying with 1 unit until you get more data on her, besides your +4 last night was very nice, I would like to see how she settles into this dose with the food change.

You're doing a great job. Welcome to PZIsland.

Good Morning All,

Ashley was at 400 for her AMPS. I ordered these syringes http://www.americandiabeteswholesale.com/-strse-562/UltiGuard-Home-Insulin-Syringe/Detail.bok last night and they are already on their way. I hope they are the right ones. I did not need a perscription for them either and I am in NJ, where I heard one might be required.

I'm ok with the food smell...DH not so much. I'm still working on finding something that both kitties really like.

I'm also ok with sticking it out a little longer with the 1U. I will definitely need advice with the conversions when I receive the micro dose syringes.

I was not able to get a ketone test in yesterday, but will today. Usually, if I take the top off of their LB and put her in it she'll pee and i just pick up her tail. The spoon is a good idea too though!

I read claudia & charlie's topic, thanks Lori, very interesting.

Ashley also seems to not be as demanding with the water, which i think is a good sign that the soupy food is sustaining her thirst.

And with all of this, I have to say she really is such a good girl...I thank G-d for her every day and will do anything for her and her well being. She hates the testing and the shots, but sits so well or trots into her favorite box and stands there ready and waiting. It's amazing!

Have a great day everyone! pc_work

hi robin...keep seeing you and have'nt said hello girlfriend! we seem to post after one another alot.

Ashley's Numbers

Hi All,

Just checking in with all of you who have been so helpful...
So we're getting ready to go into the weekend now when I can spend more time at home testing Ashley's numbers. I have to say it's kind of discouraging to still see the high numbers, but I understand why. I also haven't been able to get a good ketone test in for the last couple of days. Ashley has been a little distant and apprehensive of me, but who can blame her? Every time I go over to her she's probably like...uh oh here she comes again... My poor little girl. I can tell even when i'm just holding her and giving her kisses she thinks that i'm trying to butter her up for what's to come.

I'm hoping to get some good readings in this weekend and get a better baseline for the upcoming week. I should also be getting the micro-dose syringes soon...hopefully they'll be there when i get home today.

I really want to get her in a much better place within the next two weeks since I'm leaving for Miami on Dec. 4th. It's a business trip and I don't want to go, but it's scheduled and I'm trying not to stress over it. I'm not opposed to cancelling it if i have to, but we'll see how things go.

Have a wonderful weekend everyone!

Sheryl, just remember, in here the squeaky wheel gets the grease. So the more you pipe up the more help you are likely to get. Some here create daily new topics for what's going on with their kitty. Or at least create new topic when you do something different like upping the dose or whatever or just need/want input.

Also, put a note in your SS the day you switch your food to ALL wet low carb.

Hi Sheryl,
Welcome to PZI! You've been getting lots of good info , I see. It's great that you have your spreadsheet up and are testing regularly. Just to clarify about dose increases---we base it on the nadirs (low point in cycle) as well as the preshot numbers. Want to be sure that at the lowest point your kitty will not be going too low.
Keep posting!

yes sheryl if you can't find a yellow much less a blue all weekend with some mid cycle testing then i think we have given 1 unit it's due diligence. start a new post if you can.
and we'll talk about the dose crease once we see some kind of nadar or cycle ok.
who know's maybe we won't need to... they surprise us.
